Becoming a mother for the first time is a monumental shift. With my first child, every day was a whirlwind of new experiences and challenges. Fast forward to my second pregnancy, and I thought I had it all figured out! While that was true to some extent—I found myself less anxious about the minor details—my second son quickly reminded me that he was his own unique individual. Here are some valuable lessons I’ve gleaned from my journey with baby number two:

  1. Just because your first pregnancy unfolded a certain way, it doesn’t guarantee the same with the next.
  2. Babies can be surprisingly resilient; they adapt to being cradled like a football without any issues.
  3. You might fret about how your firstborn will adjust to no longer being the sole focus, but trust me, they’ll be just fine.
  4. Even a tiny baby can find ways to bicker with an older sibling.
  5. A handful of stained onesies can serve as the entire wardrobe for a little one.
  6. Enduring bed rest is possible—even if you think you’ll lose your mind. You might be cranky, but you can make it through.
  7. Your body may not bounce back as quickly after the second child, if it ever did.
  8. It’s completely possible to feel more exhausted than you ever imagined.
  9. Shoes? Not a necessity for babies.
  10. You can follow the same parenting methods as you did with your first, but the outcomes can be completely different.
  11. You quickly realize that managing one child is not as tough as you once thought.
  12. Forget about “me” time; you’re now in a full-on man-to-man defense situation.
  13. You may have prided yourself on being calm, but you might find yourself yelling more than you expected.
  14. I have come to terms with the fact that my singing is, in fact, not terrible!
  15. Some kids have absolutely no interest in TV—at all.
  16. Sometimes, the closest you get to a breather is lying on the floor while your kids jump around you shouting, “Yeehaw!”
  17. Child-proofing your home isn’t as foolproof as you might hope.
  18. A small child can scale furniture faster than you can grab a tissue.
  19. If the older sibling finds it funny, the younger one will repeat any silly act endlessly. Good behavior? Not so much.
  20. You can indeed love your second child just as deeply as you loved your first.
