Kelly Madison Discusses Relationships, Body Confidence, and Family Life

When my daughter arrived in August 2002, it was during the very first season of American Idol. There I was, in a hospital bed, munching on ice chips and jokingly lamenting the day we decided to take that leap into parenthood. I playfully suggested to my husband that we name our baby after the contestant voted off that night. What a fun idea, right?

That evening, the contestant who left was Christina Christian—which was a bummer for us, considering our Jewish background. But had that talented 20-year-old from Fort Worth, Texas been a little less gifted vocally, I might have been calling my daughter Kelly Madison instead.

This flashback crossed my mind when I noticed that Miss Independent herself was gracing the cover of the May issue of Redbook alongside her daughter, River Rose. It’s heartwarming to know that Kelly named her child after the nearby river she loves, all while embracing the charm of alliteration.

A lot of chatter surrounding Kelly’s cover shoot is due to her fierce stance against body-shaming (shoutout to Pink and Bethany Frankel!) and her candid admission that she doesn’t plan on scheduling intimate time with her husband anytime soon. “I always swore our relationship wouldn’t involve scheduling sex,” she shared with Redbook. “We prioritize each other. I call it the oxygen-mask mentality—take care of yourself first!” Sure, that’s easy to say now, right? Let’s see how that holds up in six months.

But seriously, Kelly is a total powerhouse when it comes to shutting down the online trolls who try to drag her down about her appearance. “I don’t obsess over my weight, which might be why others struggle with it,” she explained. “Some people are just born with a fast metabolism—that’s not me.” Even though she sometimes wishes she had a quicker metabolism, Kelly recognizes that everyone has their own battles. “Someone else probably wishes they could walk into a room and easily make friends like I can,” she reflects. “You tend to want what others have.”

Like a killer set of vocal cords, for instance.
