Congratulations to all expectant mothers! So many of you are already basking in the spotlight of this beautiful chapter in your life—getting showered with love, thoughtful gifts, and countless acts of kindness like home-cooked meals and laundry help. It’s truly a time that should be all about you. However, it seems there’s a new trend that takes this focus on you to a whole new level: the gender reveal party.
This modern celebration is often seen as a hallmark of our culture’s obsession with self-promotion. It’s akin to the selfie craze (yes, we remember how great you look in your car or gym), the extravagant prom-posal, and the overly celebrated grade promotion ceremony. Now, we’ve added the gender reveal party to the mix, as if revealing whether your little one will be a boy or girl merits throwing a whole event.
A quick search online reveals a plethora of ideas for these pink-and-blue parties where you can unveil the sex of your baby in creative ways. Whether you choose to cut into a cake with colored filling, release balloons, or pop a confetti-filled balloon, the options are endless. But really, do we need a party to share this news? Most of your family and friends are already guessing whether you’re having a boy or a girl, and they’ll still be excited no matter how you choose to reveal it. I mean, my niece recently sent me a text with a photo of her sonogram and a little sign saying “It’s a girl!” We celebrated right there over the phone—no elaborate setup needed.
Now, don’t get me wrong; I absolutely adore babies. Their cuteness makes me giddy. I’ve raised three kids myself, and I can’t get enough of their cuddles and giggles. I even serve as the nursery director at my church, satisfying my need for baby love. Yes, babies deserve to be celebrated, and the arrival of a new child is indeed magical. I’m all for showering you with love and support during your pregnancy—bringing you treats, listening to your joys and worries, and even helping out with meals or babysitting.
But here’s a thought: can’t we keep it simple? You’ll naturally receive plenty of attention and goodwill from those around you without needing to throw a lavish party. The excitement during this time is palpable, and your loved ones want to make you feel special. So why not let that be enough?
If you do feel tempted by this trend, I kindly ask you to rethink the need for an extravagant gathering. Instead, just call me. I’d love to know whether I should buy pink or blue yarn for that baby blanket, but I’d prefer to hear it from you directly, without the fanfare.

In summary, while I wholeheartedly support celebrating new life, I believe we can do so without the need for an extravagant gender reveal party. Simply sharing the news with loved ones, in a more intimate setting, can be just as fulfilling.
