What It’s Like to Parent Five Kids When Dad’s Not Around

If you’re sharp enough to catch on, you might have guessed that I’m flying solo during the days when my husband is away, managing our five lively kids without an extra set of hands.

When he’s around, he’s my right-hand man. He tackles bath time like a pro, puts the kids to bed, and shuttles them around like a seasoned bus driver. Plus, he could win awards for his dishwashing skills. But when he’s gone? It’s just me. All day, every day. I’m talking about the overwhelmed, laundry-covered, and often un-showered version of me.

Here’s the kicker: When their dad is home, our younger ones drift off to sleep like little angels. But as soon as he departs, it’s as if sleep itself has taken a holiday. Suddenly, my 2-year-old decides that 2 a.m. is the perfect time to discuss the inner workings of car engines, air conditioners, and the moon’s whereabouts. It’s like being in a scene from The Shining—minus the creepy twins!

To add a twist of irony, we somehow ended up with three dogs. (Okay, I’ll admit it’s more my doing than fate’s, but I refuse to take full blame.) When Dad’s out, the canine crew takes it upon themselves to bark all night. And they don’t stop there. They kindly invite every dog in the neighborhood to join in, resulting in a full-on barking symphony. Seriously, I’m talking about ten dogs howling in unison. No RSVP needed.

And just when you think things can’t get worse, the toilet will inevitably clog. Yep, you guessed it—it’s bound to flood the bathroom. So, I’ll be left cleaning up some not-so-pleasant fluids off the floor. Fantastic, right?

Of course, someone is bound to get sick, and I’m not talking about a sniffle. I mean feverish, cranky, “I need antibiotics” kind of sick. Sometimes, that someone is me. And guess what? There are no sick days in this gig. “Power through” is the unofficial motto of every stay-at-home parent.

All the kids’ activities, practices, and recitals happen while I’m alone. This means I’m constantly driving to pick them up and drop them off. Some days, I feel like I should just move into the car.

My husband works in Silicon Valley, which might as well be an episode of a reality show. His job is filled with parties, happy hours, and team-building adventures. Meanwhile, I’m at home, mopping up what seems like a never-ending mess. Yes, there’s beer in the fridge, but I rarely have time to enjoy it!

In short, parenting five kids while dad is away is like juggling flaming torches—exhausting, chaotic, and sometimes downright hilarious. But hey, we all get through it, one sleepless night at a time!
