Moaning about the weather? Totally pointless. I mean, it’s just weather. What are your options? (Relocation isn’t always practical, let’s be real.) But griping about being cooped up indoors with your little ones for the umpteenth weekend? That’s totally fair game. My partner and I are doing our best to limit screen time for our kiddos, and while we make them bundle up for an icy romp at the park or lure them into board games, there are just so many hours in the day. (I wouldn’t be surprised if even the most devoted Waldorf parent has given in to a little screen time—come on, let’s be honest!)
In our household, we’ve already revisited The Boxtrolls, The LEGO Movie, and the usual Octonauts episodes, not to mention the entire Fawlty Towers DVD collection. So, what’s a parent to do? Obviously, turn to Scholastic—the best resource ever—for their compilation of the 100 Greatest Movies for Kids.
The list is packed with gems: classic favorites like The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka sit alongside animated masterpieces like 101 Dalmatians and Wall-E. There are nostalgic picks, too, like The Karate Kid and The Princess Bride, along with some hidden treasures that might not be on your usual watchlist (I’m looking at you, Newsies and Time Bandits… “Don’t touch it…it’s evil…”).
This weekend, I’m excited to dive into this treasure trove of films, and I can’t decide what I’m more eager for: sharing these stories with my kids or passionately debating the selections with my partner and other equally restless parents.
Here are the Top 10 from Scholastic’s list of the 100 Greatest Kids Movies:
- The Wizard of Oz
- E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
- Mary Poppins
- Toy Story 2
- The Princess Bride
- Beauty and the Beast
- Star Wars
- Iron Giant
- Walt Disney’s Pinocchio
- A Little Princess

In summary, the cold may keep us indoors, but with a stellar lineup of movies to choose from, there’s no shortage of entertainment to keep the kids engaged while we brave the elements. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!
