Motherhood is an extraordinary, empowering journey that reshapes you in ways you never imagined. Before you know it, you might find yourself wandering the aisles of Target without a bra, enthusiastically praising your daughter for her latest creative artwork on the living room wall (which just happens to be a masterpiece made of crayon on the couch). You’ll also be grappling with how many boxes of Mac & Cheese to stock up on for the week ahead, amidst the chaos of toddler tantrums, unexpected kicks to the stomach, and the inevitable dinner table antics.

You’ll receive compliments on your parenting skills, and for a while, you may bask in the glow of those affirmations. But then, reality hits—like that moment when you realize you’ve been sitting on the toilet for far too long, engrossed in your phone while your toddler is busy turning your important documents into confetti. It’s in these moments that you realize just how much motherhood has altered you, and it can be a bit alarming.

After the infamous crayon incident, I took a step back to examine my behavior. Who is this new person? Did she really just wipe her son’s milk mustache with her finger and then clean it on her own shirt? Is she still in her pajamas at 2:30 in the afternoon? Is this acceptable?

Well, yes, it is. I assure you, I’m okay. But upon further self-reflection, I’ve come to embrace some of my more eccentric habits that might make you chuckle or cringe:

  • When I spot dried boogers on the wall, I often just choose to ignore them. Who has time for that?
  • I catch myself making “That’s what she said” jokes when my children announce things like, “Look at this giant cucumber!” No shame here.
  • Occasionally, I forget to eat lunch. This leads to me turning into a ravenous creature, eagerly scavenging for leftover scraps on my kids’ plates. Score!
  • If my children aren’t responding to my requests, I channel the wisdom of their favorite cartoon characters—thank you, Benny the Bear! You’ve helped teach my kids essential life skills like tooth brushing and sharing.
  • On days when I manage to shower before 2:30 PM, it’s usually because I’m in a rush. In those moments, I’ll drink my coffee and brush my teeth simultaneously. Multi-tasking at its finest, right?
  • My kids inspire me to create silly songs, most of which revolve around the word “poop.” My chart-toppers include “She’s a Super Poop” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot (But Make It Poop).”
  • When counting for hide-and-seek, I cozy up on the couch with a blanket and see how high I can count before they beg me to find them. One-hundred and thirty-two, one-hundred and thirty-three… blissful tranquility.
  • Lastly, I’ve earned the title of Master Butt Crack Inspector. After years of changing diapers, I’ve bestowed this honor onto my children and am quite pleased with their newfound wiping prowess. Seriously, the laundry basket has never looked so good!

Motherhood is undoubtedly peculiar and sometimes overwhelming, but it’s truly a remarkable experience. I promise, you’re going to be just fine. And if you need a breather, sneak away to the bathroom for a few minutes of solitude—oops, not today, Mom!
