Have you heard of Max’s fantastic blog, Zen Insights? He’s also running a Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming book, Zen Insights, which has everyone talking. Time is running out, so if you’re intrigued, don’t wait!
I couldn’t resist asking Max some questions about his views on habits—he’s just as passionate about them as I am!
Jamie:
What’s the biggest takeaway you’ve had regarding habits?
Max:
The most crucial insight I’ve gained is the value of a flexible mindset. When a habit veers off course, I now see it as an opportunity to learn and adapt rather than a failure. In the past, I was stuck in a fixed mindset—if my plan didn’t pan out, I felt defeated. That kind of thinking can easily derail you at the first bump in the road.
What’s a simple habit that reliably boosts your happiness?
Exercise! I used to dread it, but now I feel amazing after a workout or a run. I come away feeling strong, empowered, and completely joyful.
What’s something you’ve learned about forming healthy habits that you wish you knew at 18?
When I was younger, I understood I should develop healthy habits, but I always thought, “I’ll get to it later.” Life felt endless, so I kept pushing things like nutrition and exercise to the back burner. Now, looking back, I realize I wasted a lot of time on distractions and junk food. If I had started the habits I enjoy now earlier, I’d be in a much better place. No regrets, just a bit wiser!
Do you have habits that sometimes hinder your happiness?
I’ve learned that I can find happiness in any moment if I’m present. So, when I forget to stay present, that’s the only habit that disrupts my joy. And, yes, I do this quite often!
Which habits do you prioritize?
I focus on my creative work early, practice mindfulness, exercise, eat healthy vegan meals, and cultivate gratitude and compassion. In no particular order, of course!
How do you handle challenges like social gatherings that can throw you off track?
Social events can be tricky, but I view them as minor bumps in the road. If you keep a long-term perspective, they aren’t as daunting.
Have you successfully adopted a challenging healthy habit or broken a bad one? How?
Absolutely! I’ve transformed many habits, starting with quitting smoking. I took up running, eventually completing marathons and an ultramarathon. I also embraced healthier eating, simplified my life, woke up early, tackled my debts, practiced meditation, and enhanced my focus. I learned that taking one habit at a time, starting small, and having accountability from others made the biggest difference. Enjoying the journey and adapting to setbacks were key.
Would you say you’re an Upholder, a Questioner, a Rebel, or an Obliger?
I’m definitely an Obliger! I thrive on commitments to others but tend to let myself slide if it’s just for me.
What obstacles do you face in maintaining your healthy habits?
Travel and social events can disrupt my routine, but I’ve learned to manage them. I try to stick to vegan options and not overindulge while traveling. Social gatherings? I treat them as minor hiccups in the grand scheme of things. Unplanned interruptions are simply part of the journey, not a sign of weakness. I take a deep breath, smile, and enjoy each moment.
