Parenting is undeniably quirky. To keep up with my household of little eccentrics, I’ve found myself doing some truly bizarre things that would have made my younger self scream, “Get me out of this wacky world!” But we engage in these antics, either for the fun of it or because we’re so sleep-deprived that a family dinner out seems like a genius idea—until we realize it’s a total disaster.
Here’s a glimpse into some of the oddball moments I’ve experienced as a parent:
- I’ve bought my kids an array of unusual items—think slingshots, glitter pens, Play-Doh, plastic swords, rainbow looms, Legos, and stickers—all without any pressure from anyone.
- I once pretended a toy elephant was peeing over the sink after telling my daughter that her stuffed animal couldn’t sit on the toilet.
- I encouraged my kids to share their thoughts and opinions, and honestly, I’m still questioning that decision.
- I’ve belted out the wrong lyrics to songs, dancing like a trained monkey to motivate my child to do things they were resistant to, like, “Let it go! Let it go! Let that poop come o-o-out!”
- I knowingly gave gum to a three-year-old—what was I thinking?
- I’ve been so exhausted that I’ve searched high and low for my phone, only to realize I was talking on it the whole time.
- I once mistakenly tucked in one of my daughter’s stuffed animals, which led to a hundred more bedtime tasks.
- I told my daughter that the mushroom she was eating was chicken and secretly laughed when she enjoyed it. HA!
- I’ve been so astonished by one of my child’s bowel movements that I’ve called my partner in to see it—more than once!
- In a moment of weakness, I let my kids choose anything they wanted at the bookstore. Never again, indecision is a nightmare!
- We’ve tried to foster independence in our kids, and now they think they can handle everything on their own—spoiler alert: they can’t!
- I’ve even given someone else a suppository. Yep, that happened.
