A Refreshingly Honest Holiday Update

Hey there, friends!

As the holiday season rolls around again, it’s that familiar time when the mailbox fills up with holiday cards, many of which come with The Annual Holiday Newsletter. You know the kind—carefully curated snapshots of happy families and perfect lives, all polished and poised for admiration. I’ve been guilty of crafting these too, rifling through my calendar to find the few bright spots in a sea of chaos, all in an effort to showcase how fabulous my life is. But let’s face it: the effort it takes to glam up our reality can be exhausting, and deep down, we all know it’s just a highlight reel.

So, let’s skip the fluff and get real with a No-Bullshit Holiday Newsletter! Here’s mine…

Dear Friends Near and Far,

Well, here we are again—another year gone by. Doesn’t it feel like we’re all speeding up toward some cosmic finish line? Just me?

In the spirit of full transparency, let’s recap what’s been happening at our house this past year. Spoiler alert: It was a mixed bag. Sure, we’ve got food on the table and a roof overhead (so no need to send the food bank our way), but let’s just say there’s room for improvement!

The kids? Well, they’ve had a relatively uneventful year. Max has been battling some serious acne—definitely not a trait I passed down! He finally landed a job after months of us nagging him, so at least that’s a win. Then there’s Emma, who we had to pull out of the gifted program because, well, let’s just say it wasn’t her scene. She’s still hitting home runs in little league though!

The twins are growing up fast! Ava now has body odor (yikes!), and Lily is mastering the art of dramatic meltdowns. It’s going to be a wild ride when the teenage years hit, just as I’m starting to feel the first signs of menopause. Lucky me!

Now, little Mia is still an adorable bundle of joy, though she’s developed a knack for being a bit of a diva. And Charlie? Well, he’s still our little superstar with Down syndrome. We’re considering trying hypnosis next—after all, I read somewhere that it can do wonders. And then there’s baby Scarlett, who just keeps me on my toes. Honestly, who knew babies could be this demanding?

Health-wise, we’ve been holding up pretty well, aside from that brief episode of the runs (ha!). Oh, and we did tackle a bout with lice, but I think we’ve finally evicted those little pests.

We didn’t manage a vacation this year—too many kids, not enough funds! Michael lost his job, but he’s giving self-employment a shot. Fingers crossed!

Speaking of finances, I’ve been trying to save up for some much-needed bladder repair surgery (seriously, it’s a struggle!). I’m also considering a little cosmetic upgrade—because why not? Just trying to figure out which one to prioritize, since I can’t imagine we can afford both. Unless I dip into the kids’ nonexistent college funds—who am I kidding?

The house? Let’s just say it’s seen better days. I wouldn’t call it a total disaster, but it’s not exactly a Pinterest paradise either. And I’d rather not disclose which one of us has turned to antidepressants while the other has found solace in a nightly glass (or two) of wine!

So, here’s wishing you a happy holiday season! Until next year—stay sane and keep laughing!

Best,
Lisa
