Working mothers often juggle a whirlwind of responsibilities: fitting everything into a 24-hour day, maintaining their sanity, and wondering how their career choices influence their kids. Trust me, I know firsthand how amazing working moms can be. My mom was the primary breadwinner in our family, and even though I’ve chosen to stay at home, the lessons I’ve learned from her are priceless. Here are five key takeaways.
1. Pursue Your Passions
My brother and I joke that our parents spoiled us when it comes to work. Both Mom and Dad are passionate about their jobs, which set the standard for us. I believe everyone should find something they love—whether it’s a job, hobby, or dream. It doesn’t have to be grand; even the smallest passions can add joy to our lives.
2. Hard Work Pays Off
My mom didn’t just excel at her job; she poured her heart into it. Her dedication taught me that hard work is essential, whether we aim to excel at our careers or support our families. No matter what we do, putting in effort and thought is key.
3. Prioritize Your Well-Being
Mom valued her alone time, and since becoming a parent, I get it. That’s part of why I send my kids to daycare, even though I’m at home. I need that time to recharge—like actually finishing a cup of coffee without interruption! It’s vital for all parents to recognize that their needs are as important as their children’s.
4. Embrace Diversity in Parenting Choices
My mom always did her own thing, unfazed by others’ opinions. She never judged other mothers, regardless of their choices to work or stay home. Her belief was simple: everyone does their best based on their unique circumstances. It’s a mantra I live by, and it’s refreshing to promote understanding over judgment.
5. Be a Role Model
A friend of mine once said her reason for working is to inspire her daughters. Showing both girls and boys that moms can thrive in the workplace is crucial, especially when society might say otherwise. As a stay-at-home mom, I still discuss gender roles with my kids, reminding them that “Of course women can work; your grandmother does too!” Thanks to my mom’s influence, I wholeheartedly agree on the importance of independence for women.
Having a working mother is truly a gift. Without her example, I might not have pursued my dreams with the same vigor. I aspire to be that same source of inspiration for my children. So, to all the working moms out there, remember: your kids will not only be fine with you having a job, but they’ll likely appreciate having such a hardworking and motivating role model.
