Curiosity in Action

Little ones are naturally inquisitive, and that curiosity is essential for their growth and development. However, it can also drive parents to the brink of madness, and more importantly, lead to dangerous situations if your home isn’t adequately prepared. Before your tiny explorer starts crawling around, here are some crucial steps to ensure your home is safe and sound.

  1. Floor Check-Up: Start by inspecting your floors and everything below three feet for small items that could be choking hazards or toxic. If it’s within reach, it’s likely to end up in your baby’s mouth! Be sure to look under furniture, around vents, and between couch cushions. Items like loose change, small toys, batteries, and even nail polish can pose risks.
  2. Relocate Breakables: Move any fragile items—such as vases, picture frames, and ceramics—out of reach. Remember, as soon as your baby starts pulling themselves up, they’ll also try to climb. If you have a curio cabinet, secure it. And if your CDs or DVDs are low enough for tiny hands, consider moving them to higher ground. Alternatively, you could just rent a storage unit for your valuable items for the next 18 years!
  3. Secure Furniture: Ensure that heavy furniture like bookshelves and entertainment centers are anchored to the wall using brackets. Babies love to pull up and climb on anything they can reach. Also, cover sharp corners with corner guards to prevent injuries.
  4. Tame Those Cords: Power cords should either be hidden away or fastened securely. Little ones can trip, strangle, or even pull down electronics by yanking on cords. Don’t forget to use outlet covers for any open sockets! And while you’re at it, keep window blind cords out of reach. If you use tablecloths, make sure there’s nothing hazardous on the table that could fall.
  5. Upgrade Doorstops: If you have two-piece doorstops, consider replacing them with safer options, as they can easily come apart and become choking hazards for your curious toddler.
  6. Cook Smart: Use the back burners on the stove whenever possible, and turn pot handles inward to prevent any accidents. Multitasking is great, but holding your little one while cooking could lead to disaster.
  7. Hide Dangerous Items: Knives, glassware, and cleaning supplies should be stored in cabinets above your child’s reach or locked away with child-safety locks. Don’t forget about medications and cosmetics too. In fact, it’s wise to install child-safety locks on all drawers, as kids can use them to climb up. Your trash cans should be behind a locked door or have secure lids. Consider using child safety gates to block off areas like the kitchen or bathroom.
  8. Water Safety: Never leave mop buckets or bathwater unattended, as even a small amount of water can pose a drowning risk. Toilet seat locks are a must, and set your water heater to 120 degrees or lower to avoid burns.
  9. Watch Out for Everyday Items: Don’t overlook everyday items that can attract your baby’s attention! Things like soaps, baby powder, or even your makeup bag can become playthings if they’re within reach.

But don’t fret—there will come a day when you can return to your beautifully decorated home. Until then, safety first!
