We’ve all experienced that eye-opening moment when we realize our parents are more than just the figures who raised us—they are, in fact, real people with their own lives. Maybe it hit you when you overheard your parents discussing their wild younger days, or perhaps it was when your uncle playfully spiked your mom’s iced tea at your graduation party, leaving her a bit worse for wear the next day. These moments serve as a reminder that the people we often see as mere parents are just as flawed and human as we are. Mind blown, right?
This realization has made me ponder my own relationship with my kids. As of now, they think I’m the bee’s knees, wanting to be by my side every waking hour. While it’s incredibly flattering and sweet, I know this phase won’t last forever. One day, they might want me to drop them off a block away from school to avoid the embarrassment of being seen with me. I can only hope that when the teenage years roll around, they will come to understand that I’m not just “Mom”—I’m also a person with my own quirks and history.
To help them grasp this, I’ve decided to drop a few hints that I’m not just their mother.
Dear kids:
- Just like I learned about my parents and their parents, I’ll let you in on a little secret: you didn’t arrive via a stork. Do the math!
- While I may be aging, I still know how to bust a move. I can’t predict what tunes I’ll be grooving to when I’m older, but I will forever jam to “Baby Got Back.”
- My worries about you heading off to college are partly due to my own past, like the time I polished off a bottle of Hawkeye Vodka while cramming for a Philosophy exam. Let’s just say our Freudian insights didn’t quite translate to good grades!
- And by the way, Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny all have the same handwriting because… well, you can figure that out!
- I might not be “allergic” to cats, and the radio didn’t stop playing Justin “Beaver” tracks just because he had a run-in with the law. Sometimes, I just stretch the truth a little, okay?
- Spoiler alert: I hid stuff from my parents too. Newsflash: 9 times out of 10, they found out.
- And yes, I have crushes on celebrities. If you ever check out my blog, you might discover who they are!
- Lastly, chores like laundry, garbage duty, and algebra? Yeah, I think they’re just as tedious as you do.
Love, your mom.
So, there you have it! A little peek into my world, where I’m not just a mom but a real, sometimes fumbling, always loving person trying to navigate this journey alongside you.

Summary:
Parenting is a journey filled with humorous and eye-opening moments that reveal our humanity. Kids may see their parents as just parents, but there’s a whole person behind that title. Embracing this truth can help bridge the gap as they grow older.
