Ithaca is one-of-a-kind, and after living in various places, I can confidently say it’s the best. If you’re visiting Ithaca with children, here are ten activities that you absolutely shouldn’t miss!
1. Cass Park and the Ithaca Children’s Garden
Start your adventure at Cass Park, home to the delightful Ithaca Children’s Garden. This charming section of the park features a fruit and vegetable garden where kids can roam freely, sample their own snacks, and learn about food cultivation. There’s a massive turtle sculpture adorned with the phases of the moon, plus art installations, mushroom-shaped drums, and whimsical playhouses for the little ones to enjoy.
2. Waterfall Tour
With a city motto like “Ithaca is Gorges,” it’s no surprise that we boast over 100 stunning waterfalls. Spend a day exploring them all! Some waterfalls are perfect for splashing around, while others are best admired from a distance. Taughannock Falls, taller than Niagara, is a must-see.
3. Ice Cream Indulgence
No trip is complete without some ice cream! Ithaca boasts a variety of sweet spots, but my top picks are Purity and Smart Yogurt. Purity offers a plethora of flavors—including dairy-free and sugar-free options—served in charming red picnic areas. If yogurt is your jam, Smart Yogurt is locally owned and offers delicious, handcrafted yogurt with a topping bar that will make any kid smile.
4. Bouncing Fun at Niki’s Party Place
Need a moment to relax while the kiddos burn off some energy? Head to Niki’s Party Place (yes, we call it the bounce house in the mall). For just $5, kids can jump and play for an hour while you catch up on your phone or enjoy people-watching from the sidelines. It’s a great indoor option, especially during chilly months.
5. Dog Park Adventures
If you brought your furry friends along, Ithaca has an off-leash dog park that’s split into sections for large and small dogs. Kids will have a blast playing with the pups while you enjoy the shaded seating areas. Just keep in mind that the restrooms aren’t super close for little ones.
6. Ithaca Farmer’s Market
If you’re in town on a Saturday, don’t miss the Ithaca Farmer’s Market! With over 50 vendors, you can browse fresh produce, artisanal goods, and tasty food booths. The market’s location on Cayuga Lake is perfect for a leisurely stroll or feeding the ducks after you’ve enjoyed some local delights.
7. Wine Tasting at Americana Vineyards
For families who appreciate good wine, Americana Vineyards offers a delightful tasting experience. While you sample wines, your kids can enjoy the company of friendly dogs and cats that roam the grounds. Plus, the attached café serves some of the best food in town!
8. The Sagan Planet Walk
For budding astronomers, the Sagan Planet Walk is a fantastic outing! This scale model of the solar system starts at The Commons downtown. Grab a Solar System passport, and as you make your way through the planets, you’ll end at the Sciencentre, where kids can enjoy hands-on exhibits including a two-story kinetic sculpture and mini-golf.
9. Myers Park
Myers Park is an excellent spot for a day or even a camping trip. With RV sites by the lake, two playgrounds, and a swimming area supervised by lifeguards, it’s ideal for family fun. The park also has volleyball courts and a marina for boat launching, so you can easily fill your day with activities.
10. Cayuga Nature Center
Last but not least, don’t forget to explore the Cayuga Nature Center! Kids can engage with various animals, including peacocks and hedgehogs, and climb a six-story treehouse. The scenic trails are perfect for hiking, making it a wonderful place to connect with nature.
