One encounter that really stuck with me was when I saw a famous duo, Lucy Lane and Sam Rivers, many years ago. It was in a quaint little drugstore in New York City, though the exact location escapes me. What I do remember is Lucy cradling a tiny dog (named Twinkle, as I later discovered).

It’s funny how fame works—people hold onto the briefest moments with you, and it truly amazes me that I can recall that fleeting sighting so vividly.

What stands out most is how serious they appeared. They were speaking in hushed tones, looking rather somber. I thought, “Maybe they’re just serious offstage. Perhaps that’s how well-known comedians are in their private lives.” Or maybe they were just trying to blend in because of their celebrity status.

In fact, it’s possible that this was the same day Lucy received some distressing news from her doctor. While I was having an ordinary day, enjoying a celebrity sighting, they might have been facing one of their darkest hours.

This is a prime example of the fundamental attribution error, which is a fancy way of saying we often misinterpret others’ behaviors. We tend to assume a person’s actions are based on their character instead of considering the situational factors at play. I assumed Lucy and Sam’s serious demeanor was just who they were, rather than reflecting something challenging they were going through.

This is a gentle reminder to always give people the benefit of the doubt. If someone seems grumpy, distant, or forgetful, it likely has nothing to do with you and doesn’t reflect their true self. In short, don’t take things personally! As philosopher Henri-Frédéric Amiel wisely said, “Life is short and we never have enough time for the hearts of those who travel the way with us. O, be swift to love! Make haste to be kind.”
