The Beta Version of You

There’s this notion that convenience has paralyzed us; that the sheer volume of choices leaves us feeling overwhelmed and indecisive. While I believe that’s partially true, I think it misses the mark when it comes to why we might ditch our first meditation class for a binge-watch of Transparent instead. It’s all too tempting to stay put, both in our physical space and emotionally. We’re all aware that many of our long-standing issues stem from deep-seated beliefs we aren’t even conscious of. Choosing to remain stagnant when we desire progress is like giving in to our inner saboteur.

I’m convinced that being healthy is a real challenge because we subconsciously cling to our comfort zones, holding onto our outdated identities—whether it’s being the “sick one,” the “weak one,” or the “outsider.” We often recycle old narratives and rely on antiquated perspectives, comforted by the viewpoints we adopted as children. If we don’t actively challenge these beliefs, we tend to default to them. Each time we opt out of something we know we should do, we’re just reverting to those familiar old stories about ourselves.

Growing up, my stepfather was a big fan of gadgets. He transformed our house into a tech wonderland, complete with intercoms on every phone, which he would “accidentally” use to eavesdrop on our private chats. Our basement resembled a tech junkyard filled with cables, old cameras, and batteries. One evening, he excitedly introduced a Betamax VCR, proclaiming it to be “the future.”

But guess what? It wasn’t the future. It became obsolete faster than you could say “video cassette.” The unconscious images we have of ourselves function like Betamax: outdated and inefficient. We can keep using them to frame our self-narratives, but wouldn’t it be wiser to invest in our future and finally ditch that useless model?
