During your baby’s first year, you’ll become quite familiar with your pediatrician as you attend weekly and then monthly well baby visits. Each appointment will generally cover a few essential checks:

Growth Measurements

Your baby’s length, weight, and head circumference will be measured and noted in her file. The doctor will then compare these measurements to growth charts for her age group. It’s a great way to see how your little one stacks up!

Behavioral and Developmental Evaluations

Expect your doctor to ask about your baby’s behaviors, milestones, and reactions. This is your chance to get the pediatrician’s undivided attention, so don’t hesitate to voice any concerns or burning questions you might have!

Physical Examination

Your baby will undergo a thorough check-up that includes the following areas:

  • Head: The doctor will assess the soft spots (fontanels) and monitor the overall shape and size of your baby’s head.
  • Ears: The examination will check for any fluid or signs of infection, along with how your baby responds to sounds.
  • Eyes: Expect the doctor to look for blocked tear ducts or discharge, often using a small flashlight to track your baby’s eye movements.
  • Mouth: The pediatrician will check for sores, swollen gums, and signs of oral thrush. As your baby grows, discussions about feeding habits and teething will also arise.
  • Skin: The doctor will examine your baby’s skin for any birthmarks or rashes.
  • Heart and Lungs: Using a stethoscope, the doctor will listen to your baby’s heart and lungs for any irregular sounds.
  • Abdomen: A gentle press or massage may be performed to check for tenderness or enlarged organs.
  • Hips and Legs: The doctor will move your baby’s legs in a bicycle-like motion to ensure there are no dislocations or hip issues.
  • Genitals: The diaper will be removed for an inspection, checking for rashes, tenderness, or signs of infection. If your baby is a boy, the doctor will confirm that his testes have descended, while for girls, questions about vaginal discharge may arise. Don’t forget to bring a clean diaper along!

Vaccinations

Yes, those are on the agenda too!

A Bit of Social Time

And lastly, there’s that moment in the waiting room when everyone coos over your baby. Don’t let the curious toddler or teen mom staring at you freak you out—she’s just reminiscing about her own little one. Trust us, these moments are the good old days!
