Growing up on Long Island was like living in a never-ending adventure! With its rich history—from the glamorous “Gold Coast” to the stunning beaches stretching across the North and South Shores, plus a variety of lighthouses, trails, museums, and eateries—there’s always something exciting to do here. I’m thrilled to raise my son in this vibrant place and share our favorite spots with him. Narrowing it down was no easy feat, but here’s my list of ten engaging activities to enjoy on Long Island with your kids!
- Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center, Riverhead. This aquarium is a treasure trove of fun and learning! With both indoor and outdoor exhibits, a butterfly house, sea lion performances, and even a Penguin Egg Hunt in spring, there’s no shortage of excitement. They also feature an Interactive Salt Marsh, a “Scientist for a Day” program, and a unique Sleep with the Fishes overnight experience!
- Long Island Children’s Museum, Garden City. A hands-on museum designed specifically for children, it offers various spaces catering to different learning styles. Kids can burn off energy in the “TotSpot” and “Climb It” zones, step into a giant bubble at the “Bubble” exhibit, or unleash their creativity at the “Communication Station” by making animations and news broadcasts.
- The Cradle of Aviation, Garden City. With more than 30 interactive exhibits, cockpits to explore, a planetarium, and a carousel, you’ll find it hard to fit everything into one visit! Don’t miss the Junior Jet Club, tailored for kids up to age 6, where they can enjoy flight-themed activities and hands-on fun.
- Long Island Game Farm, Manorville. This wildlife park and zoo is perfect for families wanting to learn about animals through engaging exhibits and entertainment. From train rides to feeding baby animals and pony rides, there’s plenty to keep the kids busy!
- Greenport’s Antique Carousel, Greenport. Nestled in the charming town of Greenport, this carousel is over a century old and protected by glass from the salty air. Enjoy a ride and then treat yourself to some homemade ice cream at Sandpiper Ice Cream (142 Main Street)! After all that walking around Long Island with kids, you’ve earned it!
- Fairs, Festivals, and Farmer’s Markets. No matter when you visit, there’s always an event to enjoy! Many fire departments host their own “Fireman’s Fair” during summer. In the fall, Northport’s Cow Harbor Day is a must-see where shops and restaurants spill onto the closed-off streets. Plus, farmer’s markets are available year-round, showcasing fresh local produce and seafood!
- Montauk Lighthouse, Montauk. As New York State’s first lighthouse and the fourth oldest in the country, Montauk Lighthouse is a historical gem. Climb the 137 iron steps for a rewarding view or take a scenic walk around the grounds for stunning ocean vistas.
- Fire Island. For a day of fun, hop on one of the three ferries from the South Shore to Fire Island! This charming barrier island features beautiful beaches, delightful outdoor restaurants, and quaint gift shops. Remember, the only wheels allowed here are the ones on your bike, making it a peaceful escape for families!
- Seal Walk, Oakdale. This winter activity is perfect for getting outdoors! Bundle up and enjoy the fresh air while observing seals in their natural habitat. Just be sure to reserve your spot in advance, as they fill up quickly!
- Restaurants. Long Island boasts an incredible variety of dining options! Some local favorites include Skipper’s Pub in Northport for their famous fish and chips, The Library Café in Farmingdale for their must-try burgers, and Cool Water Grill in Bay Shore for a lovely waterside meal featuring burgers and seafood.
