A New Term for the Modern Mom: The “Never Had a Baby Body”

I think we need a fresh term in the English language—actually, in every language: “Never Had a Baby Body.” It’s a single, versatile word that can serve as a noun, pronoun, and adjective, and it’s best expressed in one breath. As soon as you say it, you can picture it clearly. You know the type—bodies that look more like a pre-teen boy than a mom. Sound familiar?

This term popped into my head when a colleague of my partner, Alex, dropped by to pick him up for a four-hour drive to conduct some interviews. She arrived looking fresh, dressed in a cute little outfit that showcased her Never Had a Baby Body (noun). Meanwhile, I was home with our youngest, just a couple of months old, still nursing, hanging onto that pregnancy weight, and rocking a maternity top because it was the only clean thing in sight.

Can you picture the scene? The Never Had a Baby Body (pronoun) left with my husband, and I thought, “Maybe it’s time to wash my hair before he returns.”

Then a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a honeymoon photo of myself. I couldn’t help but think, “Who’s that stunning lady in a bikini with my husband?” It turned out to be my own Never Had a Baby Body (noun) from back then. Sure, I looked great, but it took zero effort to get there, so I find it hard to give myself any credit.

Now, when I see a mom flaunting an amazing figure, I can’t help but admire her determination to whip her body back into shape. With no personal chef, a drill-sergeant trainer, or an extra dose of willpower, I know my Never Had a Baby Body (adjective) days are behind me.

And you know what? I’m completely fine with that. At the end of the day, I have four wonderful kids who I wouldn’t trade for anything—including a Never Had a Baby Body (adjective)—and a fantastic husband who loves me just the way I am.

I’ll take that over a Never Had a Baby Body (noun) any day.
