Ah, the joys of parenthood! When my partner Alex and I first became parents, we were the couple everyone deemed the “young ones.” We tied the knot at 18 and were the first among our friends to start a family (totally by accident, mind you). “You’re just kids!” was a common refrain we heard, blissfully unaware of how fortunate we truly were. Occasionally, we even added a few years to our ages just to dodge those awkward conversations.
But then, like a bolt from the blue, that all changed.
A few weeks ago, while the kids commandeered our summer road trip playlist (thanks for the endless Taylor Swift, kiddos), I had a moment of sheer horror: my daughter Mia is closer to being 22 than I am. TWENTY TWO. That age was synonymous with freedom and fun in my own life, and now my daughter is practically there? Thanks a lot, Taylor Swift, for that wake-up call!
It’s been weeks, and I can’t shake off this unsettling truth. So, if I have to endure this realization, I might as well share the fun with you. Isn’t that what blogging is for? Get ready to curl up in the fetal position…
- Remember the adorable Nirvana baby? He’s 21 now and likely using his fleeting fame to charm someone at a bar—where he can legally sip a drink.
- The iconic Ross and Rachel kiss? It happened 18 years ago. EIGHTEEN.
- Songs from Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are now fixtures on classic rock stations. Yikes!
- “Did you know the human head weighs eight pounds?” Sure, but did you realize that little Jonathan Lipnicki from Jerry Maguire has grown up to look like this?
- Kids born in 1997 can now drive. Yes, legally!
- Blood Sugar Sex Magik was released 22 years ago. A baby conceived to it would now be 21—probably sharing a drink with the Nirvana baby!
- The Challenger tragedy occurred 27 years ago.
- The kids you once babysat might now be married with their own little ones. (At least the ones I watched are—ouch.)
- Johnny Depp is officially 50.
- And guess what? We’re practically grown-ups now. I’m really sorry about that.
