Anticipating Your Arrival

Dear Little One,

Hey there! It’s your mom, and I’m just bursting with excitement to finally meet you! Your nursery is nearly complete in our new home. We were sad to leave the city behind, but we wanted to ensure you and your big brother could attend top-notch schools. Now we have a playroom, a spacious yard, and four bedrooms for you, your brother, and maybe another sibling someday.

We’ve been eagerly awaiting your arrival. What’s the holdup, little one? Are you being considerate of my other first-time mommy friends? That’s sweet of you, but honestly, everyone seems to be either pregnant or juggling baby number one or two! You should have seen the Christmas cards this year—half of them were announcements of new arrivals! Don’t worry; you won’t be stepping—uh, crawling—on anyone’s toes.

Are you trying to teach me a lesson about patience? I know it’s not my strong suit. I can handle your big brother just fine, but toss me into a traffic jam or throw a computer glitch my way, and I lose all my cool.

Are you going to be just like me and take your sweet time getting here? I’ve always been a slowpoke. Grandma used to joke that I was always the last one out the school doors.

Are you concerned that our love for your brother means there won’t be room for you? That’s just not true! My affection for him doesn’t lessen the excitement I have for you. In fact, loving him so much makes me even more eager to welcome you into our family. I can’t wait to see you two grow up together!

Are you worried that being in my belly will make me feel nauseous? Don’t fret! We have three bathrooms in this house, and I would gladly bow to the porcelain gods for you.

Do you think you’ll cause me back pain? That’s why I’m planning to sign up for pre-natal yoga—it’ll be great!

And if you’re concerned about being a boy (which I suspect you might be) instead of a girl (your dad thinks you’ll be a girl), don’t be! I’ll welcome you with open arms. Plus, I won’t have to learn how to wipe down!

Just so you know, you’re on my mind all the time. Every single day—more times than I can count! I daydream about cuddling with you after nursing, witnessing your first steps, and trying not to cry on your first day of Kindergarten.

So, what’s taking so long? Why can’t I be pregnant yet? Some days, I worry that your brother’s conception and birth were just miracles, and the universe might not have more children in store for me. Please prove me wrong and join our little family. There’s more than enough love to go around.

Your big brother will be heading to preschool in the fall, and when Grandpa asked what I’d do during that time, I immediately thought of you. Until then, here I am… just waiting.

Love,
Mommy
