Being a Member of The New Mom Society

Four months ago, I got initiated into the New Mom Society. The moment my little one entered this world, my entire existence flipped upside down.

Sound a bit dramatic? Maybe. But is it true? Without a doubt.

When you become a part of the New Mom Society, you won’t receive a shiny membership card or an extravagant welcoming party. However, you will go through a whirlwind of incredible, frustrating, joyous, and sometimes bewildering experiences that create an unbreakable bond with your fellow “New Mom Society” members.

Curious about what it’s like? Well, here’s a glimpse into new motherhood:

  • Embracing selflessness most of the time.
  • Constantly questioning if you’re doing things right.
  • Hosting more visitors at home than you ever imagined, and realizing they’re all there to meet your baby, not you.
  • Wishing for the simplicity of your pre-baby life.
  • Eventually forgetting the details of that old life, but knowing you no longer want to go back to life “before baby.”
  • Shedding tears when your baby cries, when you leave your baby, and when they hit a new milestone. Just, tears.
  • Coming to terms with the fact that much of your prior preparation was in vain, yet somehow, you’ll manage.
  • Gaining newfound respect for your own mom. Trust me, it’s time to pick up that phone and say “thank you.”
  • Watching your partner interact with your child and falling in love with them all over again in a way you never expected.
  • Finally grasping the unconditional love your parents have for you.
  • Dealing with all kinds of leaks. Seriously, it’s a thing.
  • Experiencing days that feel like they last forever, yet months that vanish in a blink.
  • Trading in your former life of freedom for a new, ever-changing reality.
  • Actually looking forward to a dentist appointment because it’s the only “me” time you’ll snag this week.
  • Sniffing various stains to identify if it’s pee, spit-up, breast milk, or something else entirely.
  • Reflexively sticking your hand out to catch the aforementioned liquids.
  • Chatting about poop at least five times a day.
  • Adjusting your hygiene standards (a shower every other day feels like a luxury).
  • Redefining what it means to get a good night’s sleep (four hours in a row? You’re living the dream!).
  • Letting go of all those judgments you held about parenting before diving into it yourself.
  • Wondering if that fellow new mom you spotted on the street is just waiting for you to approach her and say “hi.” Spoiler alert: she is.
  • Returning to work and stressing about not spending enough time with your baby.
  • Staying home and fretting that your little one would benefit from a more stimulating setting.
  • Juggling work-from-home responsibilities while worrying that neither your job nor your baby is getting adequate attention.
  • Worrying, worrying, worrying!

New motherhood is a mix of power, struggle, overwhelm, excitement, confusion… and it’s absolutely beautiful—even when you’re covered in various bodily fluids.
