If you’re not a fan of Los Angeles, you’ll probably love Santa Monica. With its clean air, walkable streets, perfect climate, stunning beaches, and the luxury of never having to hit the freeway, it’s a little slice of heaven. After spending 15 years basking in the Santa Monica sun, I truly discovered its family-friendly charm once I had my son. Here are our ten favorite spots that are sure to bring smiles to your family’s faces!
- Santa Monica Pier – This century-old landmark is the epitome of family fun, complete with enough churros to satisfy any sweet tooth. There are rides for all ages, from a thrilling rollercoaster to an enchanting carousel. Challenge the kids to classic carnival games, or enjoy retro favorites like Ms. Pac-Man and air hockey. Don’t forget to check out the Pacific Wheel, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel, where kids can let out their loudest screams while the ocean listens.
- Main Street Farmer’s Market – Every Sunday, families flock here to sample fresh produce, enjoy delicious breakfast burritos, and groove to live music. Little ones will adore the petting zoo with its cute animals, balloon artists, face painting, and pony rides—don’t worry, hand sanitizer is on deck!
- Annenberg Beach House – While all Santa Monica beaches are stunning, this one north of the California Incline is exceptionally kid-friendly. It features a shaded sandy play area, a warm-water splash pad, and a snack bar where shoes are optional. During summer, you can opt for a dip in the heated public pool (reservations are a good idea for weekends), and there’s even a game room for rainy days.
- Third Street Promenade – This vibrant outdoor shopping area is brimming with stores, eateries, and theaters, but kids are often more captivated by the street performers, including musicians, dancers, and even fire eaters! My little explorer can spend ages mesmerized by the spitting dinosaur fountains—you really have to see them!
- Santa Monica Place – If you’re in town for the holidays, this three-level outdoor mall next to the Promenade is the place to be for Santa and the Easter Bunny sightings. Enjoy a meal at the top-floor food court with a view of “The Whale,” a play structure for little ones. And if you need a pick-me-up, head to the Nordstrom shoe department for complimentary balloons!
- The Museum of Flying – Get away from the crowds at this hidden gem located at Santa Monica Airport. With impressive aircraft displays and a flight simulator, this museum is a delight for kids aged five and under, who can enter for free. After your visit, grab a bite at the Spitfire Grill and watch planes take off and land from the bleachers.
- Tongva Park – This stunning 6-acre park near the pier is a child’s paradise. From tall climbing structures and slippery slides to a splash pad and picnic areas, there’s something for everyone. Parents can relax on stylish benches while enjoying ocean views, if only there were a way to take a nap!
- Books and Cookies – Sometimes it rains in Santa Monica, and when it does, head to this charming children’s bookstore and indoor play space on Main St. They offer freshly baked cookies and healthy snacks, plus fun drop-in classes that vary from arts and crafts to music.
- Santa Monica Bike Path – Avoid the notorious traffic by biking along this 8.5-mile path that runs alongside the ocean all the way to Venice Beach. Rent bikes or rollerblades from any Perry’s Cafe and Rentals location—there are four options along the beach—and let the adventure begin!
- Sweet Rose Creamery – No visit to Santa Monica is complete without a stop at this delightful ice cream shop. With organic ingredients and unique flavors, it’s no wonder there’s often a line out the door. My daughter can’t resist their chocolate-dipped ice cream bon-bons, which are pure bliss! Located at the Brentwood Country Mart, you’ll also find fun horsey rides and a trendy toy store nearby. If you’re hungry before dessert, Kay & Dave’s Mexican cantina across the street is a must-try!
