Mom’s Moment in the Frame

Last night, I stumbled upon a delightful blog post by a woman named Rachel Lane titled “Mom’s Moment in the Frame.” In it, Rachel expresses her struggle with being in photos: “I’m everywhere in my children’s lives, yet I have very few pictures with them. One day, I won’t be here — and I can’t predict whether that day is tomorrow or decades from now — but I want them to have memories of me. I want them to see how I looked at them and the love I have for them. I may not be a model, and I may not be perfect, but I am absolutely their mom.”

I had a similar realization a few years ago. Family members and friends were all over our photo albums, but I was missing in action. I avoided the camera because I didn’t want to showcase my flabby arms, love handles, or those pesky gray hairs. You’d think I was a ghost, entirely absent from birthday parties, school events, and family gatherings!

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve made a conscious effort to jump in front of the camera with my kids, and it’s been a game changer. Believe it or not, there are now frames in my home featuring me and my children together… who would have thought?

Overcoming Self-Consciousness

So, how did I manage to overcome my self-consciousness? Did I suddenly become a supermodel? Nope! I discovered a little trick called “grab a kid,” and trust me, it can work wonders for you too.

Gone are the days of stiff photos standing side by side with my kiddos. Now, when it’s time for a snapshot, I pull them close, enveloping them in love (and, let’s be honest, a bit of extra body weight). Not only does this capture the affection I have for them, but it also magically takes off 15 pounds in the photo. Who needs Spanx when you have kids?

Photo Tips for Moms

Are your hips a concern? Just balance a kid on one! Got a bit of a tummy? Sit them on your lap. Want to hide a double chin? Snuggle cheek to cheek while looking up at the camera with your little one. Want to cover it all? Just wrap them in a big bear hug and only show your smiling face.

Trust me, it really works! Just take a look at this recent photo of me and my daughter, Emma, from our trip to Seattle. Look at us, all smiles and love! Sure, we were happy, but I was also grinning because she’s strategically blocking every one of my insecurities. What’s not to love about that?

Capture the Moments

So, get in those photos with your little ones. You’ll be grateful you did, and one day, they will be too. And if you’re still not ready to face your flaws staring back at you, just grab a kid, hold them tight, and say “cheese.” It never fails.
