Let’s face it: exercise has never been my jam. Sure, there were brief moments in college when I was a gym enthusiast and another short-lived phase before my wedding, but for over a decade, my physical activity has mostly consisted of walking from my car to wherever I needed to be.
I can thank my friend Mia for planting the workout bug in my ear. After seeing a picture of her—a mother of three, looking more fabulous than ever—I was intrigued. “Barre,” she said. “It transformed my body!” Then there was my friend Tara, who, after trying barre, emerged with arms I couldn’t believe. And of course, my friend Jenna wouldn’t stop bugging me to join her at a barre studio nearby. “You’ll love it!” she insisted, and finally, to get her to stop, I gave in.
I wouldn’t say I was head over heels for the class (a fusion of weightlifting, yoga, and ballet), but I tolerated it. I kept going back—twice, thrice, and now five months in, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually miss the classes when I skip a few days. It’s utterly bizarre.
Despite not having attended a group exercise class in ages, it was amusing how I instantly recognized the familiar faces in my very first session. Not that I knew them personally, but they were all archetypes of every class I had ever attended. It was oddly comforting, much like a reunion at a Weight Watchers gathering.
If you’ve ever participated in a group exercise class, you’ll likely recognize these characters:
- The Glam Gal: This is the person who shows up in full makeup, complete with perfectly applied lipstick and mascara. She works out intensely yet somehow doesn’t break a sweat, leaving as fresh as she arrived. You can bet she’s wearing more jewelry than you ever would at the gym and always smells divine, even while exiting the class.
- The Overachiever: The one who insists on doubling the weights, stacking those steps high, or even taking back-to-back classes. We get it—you’re fit. Can you tone down the grin a bit, though?
- Miss Personal Space Invader: This person chooses a spot right next to you, even when there are plenty of open spaces. You can’t help but be distracted by her, which is the last thing you need during a workout. Strangely enough, she’s probably the same person who picks the stall right next to you in an otherwise empty restroom.
- The Casual Attire Advocate: Not one to flaunt expensive workout gear, this individual shows up in an old, worn-out t-shirt. She’s been holding onto baby weight like she’s preparing for hibernation and clearly would rather be indulging in Nutella than sweating it out in the back row.
- The Inspiring Senior: This is the grandma who looks stunning and has a physique that could put many younger folks to shame. It’s both motivating and slightly disheartening to see someone twice your age look so much better than you.
- The Vocal Challenger: Ever heard someone moan and groan through the workout? That’s her. She vocalizes what everyone else is thinking with her “Ooooh”s and “Ahhh”s. It’s both amusing and a bit annoying, and she’s definitely the one who gets everyone to clap when class ends.
- The Coordination Challenger: This poor soul just can’t seem to get it right. She goes left when everyone is going right, steps forward when everyone else is stepping back, and, despite her best efforts, always finds herself in the middle of the mirror.
- The Token Guy: While it’s not unusual for men to work out, seeing one in a barre or step aerobics class can be surprising. And by surprising, I mean a little unsettling.
- Miss Important: She strolls in late, checks her emails during class, and constantly interrupts the instructor to ask about her form.
- The Dream Body: This is the one whose physique you envy. You want her arms, her thighs, her back. You’d gladly trade your cellulite for just a piece of her body.
