The 10 Characters You’ll Encounter During Your Baby Journey

Having experienced the removal of one gallbladder and the arrival of two babies (thankfully, not at the same time), I’ve spent quite a bit of time in hospital settings. Each visit was unique—goodbye to major organs and hello to cute little bundles! But regardless of the occasion, I’ve bumped into the same cast of characters each time I’ve donned that infamous hospital gown and fumbled with the TV remote. While there are truly amazing doctors and nurses out there, it seems I often encounter the less-than-stellar ones.

  1. The Grumbler: Hospital stays are tough, but The Grumbler manages to complain about everything—from the scratchy sheets to the glaring lights. They overlook the small joys of room service and the bliss of no laundry.
  2. Dr. Awkward Timing: This is the doctor who somehow manages to break bad news right after a poorly timed joke. Their lack of empathy and constant clock-watching makes you feel like just another “issue” on their list.
  3. Chatty Charlotte: You’ll know her when you see her! Is she a staff member or a fellow patient? Who knows! But she’ll appear out of nowhere and won’t stop chatting. You might be hoping for a nap, but she’s keen to discuss everything from insurance to her favorite TV shows.
  4. Nurse Gloom & Doom: This nurse is like Negative Nancy’s distant cousin. She’ll corner you at the most inconvenient times (like during your first postpartum bathroom trip) and rant about her life woes or the state of the world. You’ll just nod in agreement, hoping she doesn’t have access to sharp objects.
  5. The Photographer: When she pops in to take pictures, a polite “no thanks” doesn’t seem to cut it. You just want some privacy, not a photo shoot!
  6. The Intense Lactation Consultant: With a no-nonsense attitude, this consultant will make you feel like a failure if your baby doesn’t latch perfectly. If you dare to mention formula, prepare for a lecture that feels like it’s coming from a boot camp drill sergeant.
  7. Curious Custodian: Befriend this person! They’ll ask about your life, your job, and even your postpartum challenges. A good rapport with the Nosy Janitor can get you extra pillows and blankets, and they might even discreetly handle your empty snack wrappers.
  8. The Overly Eager Chaplain: A gentle knock, and then there he is—ready to pray with you at the most inopportune moments. I’m all for spiritual support, but not when I’m half-dressed and feeling vulnerable!
  9. The Disgruntled Staff Member: This individual can make your stay delightful or dreadful. They’ll unload their frustrations about hospital supplies while you’re just trying to focus on your new baby. Their rants about “quality vs. cost” might have you distracted from your own thoughts. Seriously, what happened to fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt?
  10. The Rambler: This hospital employee has zero boundaries. Once, an off-duty nurse sat down in my room and spilled all the messy details of her tumultuous marriage while I was supposed to be watching an important video. It was truly overwhelming, but hey, I got some extra ice packs for my discomfort in return.
