Ah, it’s that time of year again! Back to school season is upon us, and despite teaching for over a decade, I still find myself feeling butterflies in my stomach. With all the preparations ahead, it’s only natural for parents to have questions about what their kids truly need for success. While shopping lists can be daunting, I’ve got some good news—there’s no extensive supply list for my classroom!
Throughout my career, I’ve worked in schools with limited resources where we could never ask parents for supplies. I learned to stretch a tight budget and get creative with what we had. So, if your child needs something, chances are I already have it!
While fresh notebooks and shiny crayons are nice, the real supplies that foster success in kids can’t be found in any store. Here are some vital back-to-school “supplies” that I wish every child could carry with them every day:
- A Strong Sense of Self: Confidence is key! Many kids struggle with self-worth, while others may be overly confident without knowing their true strengths.
- A Well-Fed Body: Schools often provide meals, but if you can’t offer healthy food options at home, don’t hesitate to utilize our food services program. Also, please avoid sending sugary snacks or junk food for breakfast and lunch!
- Rest and Exercise: Kids are often tired due to late nights. Establish a reasonable bedtime and encourage some physical activity—children need to MOVE!
- Knowledge of Home Support: Kids thrive when they know their parents care about them and their progress. They need to feel proud when they succeed and supported when they struggle.
- Time for Themselves: Kids are often over-scheduled with activities, making it hard for them to complete homework or even relax. Ensure they have some downtime to focus and recharge.
- A Sense of Humor: Life is full of quirks! Encourage your child to find laughter in daily moments. Learning can be fun, and a light-hearted approach can enhance their educational journey.
- The Ability to Stick to a Task: Our digital world has made it easy to seek instant gratification, but it’s crucial for kids to learn perseverance. They need practice to stay focused, even when tasks get tough.
- Empathy: Teaching children to see things from others’ perspectives helps them become kinder and more understanding individuals. Empathy is a superpower in social settings!
- Recognizing Value in Everyone: When kids understand that everyone has something to contribute, they grow into collaborative and appreciative members of society.
- A Love of Life: Life can be challenging, but instilling a love of living can help children bounce back from hardships. Share beautiful moments with them, and let them know they’re cherished.
So, as you pack those backpacks with perfectly sharpened pencils and trendy binders, don’t forget to fill your children’s hearts with love and encouragement! Remind them of their strength and how proud you are to be their parent. Let them know that while school can be tough, it’s a precious opportunity, and your love for them is unwavering.

Summary: As back-to-school time approaches, the real essentials for your child’s success go beyond traditional supplies. Focus on building their confidence, ensuring they’re well-fed and rested, and nurturing their emotional and social skills. Let them know they are loved and supported through their educational journey!
