Wake Up, America: Enough is Enough

Dear America, it’s time to wake up and pay attention.

Here I am, sitting at my desk after another day of school, watching yet another school shooting scroll across my newsfeed. As an educator, I can’t help but wonder if my students, my school, and my colleagues are next on the list. Seriously, enough is enough!

Let’s stop with the tired old arguments like “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” or “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” These phrases are not only cliché, but they also contribute to the seemingly endless cycle of gun violence in our country. The facts are clear: countries with stricter gun control simply don’t encounter the same levels of gun-related deaths that we do here. It’s time to stop pretending otherwise — the manipulation of statistics is absurd. We need to wake up and finally GET RID OF GUNS.

We don’t need more firearms. In fact, we don’t need guns at all. Go ahead, criticize me if you want, but I’m calling out those who cling to the misguided belief that the right to bear arms is more important than a child’s right to live. Honestly, how can that right be more valuable?

I’m terrified. I dread the day I walk into my school and have to lock my students in a classroom, quaking in fear about what’s happening outside the door. I fear having to make the choice between my own safety and that of my students, shielding them from a potential threat. I worry about the safety of my daughter when she heads to school this coming September. It’s meant to be a safe environment, yet there’s a chance that someone could breach that sanctuary and cause harm.

What frightens me even more is that people seem to prioritize their so-called “right” to gun ownership over the lives of children who are senselessly lost to gun violence day after day in this country. It feels selfish that we’ve chosen to sacrifice our children’s safety for the ability to carry weapons designed solely for harm.

I’m scared. And enough is truly enough. Not one more life should be lost. Guns are not worth the cost of lives.

Let’s put an end to this.

In summary, it’s time to prioritize the safety of our children over outdated beliefs about gun rights. We must come together as a society and demand change before it’s too late.
