At five years old, Leo is fully capable of handling things on his own, but I’d rather not spend my evening cleaning up accidents. So, off we trot to the restroom together—sorry for the mental image.
Recently, while out for dinner, it happened again. As the waitress set my meal down, Leo suddenly declared that his stomach hurt and he couldn’t possibly wait. Off we went, hand in hand, just like a scene from a sitcom.
I can’t recall the specifics of our bathroom banter that night, but I can say it revolved around one topic: poop, poop, and more poop. Meanwhile, the line of women waiting outside must have had a different interpretation of our lively exchange. I can imagine them thinking it was a romantic comedy or something much more entertaining.
“Come on, buddy. I’d really love to savor my dinner before it turns cold.”
Grunt.
Grunt.
“Are we almost finished? Seriously.”
Grunt. Giggle. Grunt.
“Hurry it up, my dear. Next time, you’re handling this solo, messy or not!”
Grunt.
“I’m seriously losing my appetite here, champ.”
Grunt. Grunt. Grunt.
“We are NOT doing this again. I mean it! Focus, please!”
Grunt.
GRUNT.
“Finally! Let’s wrap this up and get back to dinner. I’m starving!”
Giggle.
Just for the record, it was not my finest moment as a parent.

Summary: Parenting can lead to some hilariously unpredictable moments, especially when it comes to bathroom breaks. As Leo’s need to go always seems to strike at the worst times, I find myself navigating the comical chaos of potty time. It’s a reminder that even in the most ridiculous situations, there’s always a bit of humor to be found.
