Dear Max,
Well, here we are! You’re turning 21, and I can’t help but wonder how this new chapter in your life will unfold. Which of my parenting rules still hold value, and which have become as outdated as your old toy truck? You now have the freedom to pick up a bottle of Grey Goose or enjoy a cocktail at a bar. Does that mean my words of wisdom have lost their weight, or is it that growing up makes you tune in even more?
Looking back over the past 21 years must feel monumental. Eighteen was a stepping stone, but let’s be honest—most college freshmen are still figuring things out. It’s this milestone at 21 that signals your transition into adulthood. I see glimpses of that transition when I look at you, remembering the adorable little boy who carried his Gymboree blanket everywhere and had an undying love for dinosaurs.
I know you’re excited for all that lies ahead. But here’s a little advice: don’t rush it. Embrace being 21, then 22, and so forth. Think of your life like the start of a football season, full of plays to explore, and remember that it’s okay to take your time. You’re eager—just like I was—wanting the future to arrive yesterday. But please, pause for a moment and soak in where you are right now.
As your parent, I’m stepping back a bit, giving you space to breathe and carve out your own identity. I want you to discover your path, guided by a blend of influences from us, your grandparents, your sister, and your friends (because let’s face it, friends are everything at this age).
I’m so proud when I see you make choices that reflect your own instincts. You’ve grown so much, trusting your judgment after years of depending on me to help you navigate life. You even told your father, “I don’t have to tell you and Mom everything,” which made my heart swell—because it means we did something right. Just know we’re still here, ready to offer advice if you ever need it, but it seems you’re managing just fine on your own.
Sometimes, I find myself missing that little boy with the enormous green eyes who looked at me like I was royalty. But the man you’re becoming is someone I admire endlessly. I can’t wait to see where life takes you next—though I’ll try to be patient and let you enjoy the ride.
With love,
Mom
