Reflections on Unconditional Love in Parenting

Yesterday, during my yoga session—a time when my best ideas often hit me—I had a revelation. Our instructor prompted us to focus on someone who loves us unconditionally, asking us to dedicate our practice to that person. My mind immediately went to my kids. Their love is boundless, fierce, and entirely unreserved. But then she posed a challenging question: Are we reciprocating that love? Do they truly know how deeply we care for them? It stopped me in my tracks. Do they?

I often ponder the legacy I’m creating for my children, the memories they’ll carry with them, and the kind of role model I aspire to be. When they think of me, what feelings will surface? Am I embodying the lessons I want to impart? Am I nurturing them the way I wish to be nurtured?

As their mother and the CEO of our household, it’s all too easy to get lost in the whirlwind of daily tasks, errands, and chores, often forgetting to simply be present. I can lose sight of the beauty and joy that comes with this fleeting time we share. The reality is, they won’t be little forever. Every moment I have to influence them positively is slipping away, bit by bit—day by day, hour by hour, and minute by minute.

Sure, I’m the one responsible for their discipline and keeping them accountable for their actions. I’m the one who enforces consequences—both good and bad—each and every day, often feeling like I’m navigating this parenting journey alone. It can be overwhelming, but it’s also a tremendous privilege. I have the unique opportunity to shape their lives in profound ways. How incredible is that?

During my practice, this realization hit me hard, yet it brought me joy: I will love my children every single day as if it’s the last day I’ll have with them. Because, in truth, every day is a new opportunity, and the child they are today will be different tomorrow. When they wake up, they’ve already grown.

Therefore, I consider it my honor to leave the best possible impression on them in every moment I can. This mindset is how I’ll thrive as a single mom. I will treat each day as if it’s the one they’ll remember me by.

May the force be with me on this journey!
