Toddlers can sometimes feel like tiny tornadoes of chaos, like you’ve let loose a little creature from a whimsical fairy tale who insists on a diet of only spaghetti and applesauce, while also trying to poke your eyes out during nap time. Yet, they embody the raw essence of humanity, doing all those things we secretly yearn to do but have been trained not to. There are countless reasons I cherish toddlers. (Well, at least my own. Yours? A bit of a handful.)
- Their adorableness is so powerful that even during a full-blown tantrum, you can’t help but resist the urge to toss them out the window. How is it that a red-faced, snot-nosed little one yelling at me can still look irresistibly cute? Must be some evolutionary trick.
- They experience emotions to the fullest! This can definitely backfire if they miss the random cow you pointed out during a drive, but their capacity for love is immense! It’s like a short, slightly creepy stalker love, but love nonetheless.
- You’ll develop some serious upper body strength from wrestling them into shoes, clothes, and during tooth-brushing time. I often find myself lifting my tantrum-throwing toddler at arm’s length just to avoid being kicked while escorting her to time-out. My Deltoids have never looked better!
- They live entirely in the now. You’ll learn to notice the delicate flowers along the roadside while dealing with a tiny version of yourself who is covered in wipes. And let’s not forget the sweet “I love you Mommy” song that can echo in a gas station bathroom while you try to get them to focus on, well, anything.
- Their determination is unmatched! The sheer effort they put into convincing you they need to wear their tutu with every outfit is something I wish I could bottle up and sell.
- Their desires remain refreshingly simple: rocks, water, Tupperware—just like that, their day is made.
- You’re practically a superhero in their eyes. You’ll never feel as adored as when the preschool teacher is literally prying your little one from your legs during drop-off.
- You can still pull a fast one on them. They genuinely believe that eating their vegetables will make them grow big and strong. While they may not always care, they still buy into it.
- Their excitement for the most mundane things is unparalleled. I wish I could channel even a fraction of my toddler’s enthusiasm for going through a car wash into my own daily life.
- They still crave cuddles and may call cantaloupe “camel milk.” Sure, their babyhood is slipping away, and you’ll eventually have to teach them the right names, but for now, let them enjoy their unique vocabulary. If they head off to Kindergarten still calling a dump truck a dumb f*ck, well, that’s on them for not thinking twice before turning the window sills into a canvas.

In summary, toddlers are wonderfully chaotic little beings that bring both joy and sheer exasperation. Their innocence, determination, and love remind us of the beauty in simplicity, and even though they can drive us to the brink of sanity, they also provide endless moments of laughter and affection.
