Let’s be honest: parenthood is full of unexpected twists. However, nothing could have prepared me for the revelation I experienced a few weeks ago while “play-dating” with a lovely group of fellow moms and their little ones.
The chatter went something like this:
“Little Ace just sprouted his second tooth, can you believe that?”
“Well, Sweet Pea crawled all the way to the kitchen!”
“Oh wow, look at those big eyes on Darling! Just precious!”
There I sat, half-listening, my attention drawn to my own little Nugget, confidently navigating the playground with a gleaming set of teeth and the most stunning blue eyes you could imagine. I was in awe. Here were these mamas boasting about their adorable offspring while the true gem of babies was right there among them! And then it struck me—an astonishing realization: other parents think their kids are cuter than mine.
I was taken aback. I like to think of myself as a level-headed, sensible person, so naturally, I should be a level-headed mama, right? Objectively speaking, my son is the very definition of perfection. Complete strangers have stopped me just to pinch his delightfully chunky thighs and catch a glimpse of his charmingly shy smile. You should see that dazzling grin, his captivating eyes, and the perfect little curl of golden hair at the back of his neck. He’s smart, funny, and kind-hearted. Even his diaper duty is surprisingly charming in its own way.
There was no way that Ace, Sweet Pea, or Darling could ever compete with my Nugget. Poor, misguided mamas.
But then I paused. Had I really just declared my child’s poop cute? I let that thought linger.
For a brief moment, I wondered if everyone on the planet would agree that Nugget’s mini-mess was indeed lovable. But while life is full of surprises, I’m pretty sure that poop doesn’t belong on anyone’s list of treasured things. This left me with one conclusion: I must be the President/Founder/CEO of the Delusional Mama Club. Oh boy.
With my defenses lowered, I looked around at the other babies again. Each one was indeed charming, precious, and angelic. Perfect, in their own unique ways, just as my Nugget is perfect for me.
What a delightful surprise.
