You might choose homeschooling because the traditional school system doesn’t resonate with your family values. Perhaps you see it as the perfect way to encourage your family’s love for travel. Or maybe you’ve volunteered so much at school that you’d practically earned yourself a staff badge (and let’s be honest, a refreshing drink at PTA meetings wouldn’t go amiss). As a homeschooling parent eager to expose my kids to the wonders of the world, I’ve often felt unfairly labeled as just another narrow-minded, extreme right-winger. Newsflash: that’s not me! Here are some of the great reasons we embrace homeschooling:
- Alarm Clocks? No Thanks! I can’t stand them. The sound of those morning alarms sends shivers down my spine. Sure, I still wake up early because I adore the peaceful quiet, but mostly because I love watching the hustle and bustle of minivans zooming by, packed with frazzled moms and grumpy kids. Imagine a life where setting an alarm is only necessary for catching a flight!
- Travel Freedom: We can hit the road whenever we choose! Off-season travel deals? Yes, please! I recently overheard someone saying their kids thrive in the crowded chaos of Disney… really? Who wants to stand in line for ages? Our field trips are never rushed, and if we find the attraction lacking, we can simply opt for lunch – perhaps with a glass of wine for me (cheers!).
- Pajama Days! My kids can do their schoolwork in their PJs without worrying about fashion trends. Back-to-school shopping? It’s all about comfy pajamas! And they can even cuddle with the class pet while they learn.
- Authentic Learning: The assignments they complete are genuinely theirs. I remember those extravagant projects that came in from school, looking like they were crafted by a team of professionals. Here, we skip the homework unless someone really tests my patience, and packing lunches? Not my gig – envy much?
- Worldly Discussions: We delve into diverse topics, exploring countries, cultures, religions, and, of course, food (always the food!). Sometimes, we even get to visit those countries, which really ramps up the excitement of our field trips!
- Engaging with Elections: Last election cycle, we attended a political debate to allow our oldest child to hear different viewpoints and form her own opinion. Yes, I said “feel” – it’s an essential part of understanding the world, and guess what? She wasn’t impressed by either candidate.
- Immersive Studies: I believe in teaching about Mexico during Cinco de Mayo, ideally in a Mexican restaurant, with a margarita in hand. Plus, doing household chores like vacuuming can earn you an A in PE!
- Encouraging Uniqueness: My oldest, who I affectionately call Bella, wrote in her blog about the value of not blending in: why conform when you were meant to shine? My kids are free to embrace their individuality, and trust me, they are truly remarkable (not the margarita talking).
The world is our classroom, and we fully embrace that!
(P.S. Yes, some days the cocktail hour may start a tad earlier, but my mom friends totally get it.)
