Other Moms Are Superstars, and Here I Am Just Trying to Keep Up

I can’t help but picture other moms whipping up gourmet meals with all the food groups represented—three times a day—while here I am, resorting to microwave scrambled eggs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I imagine other mothers calmly engaging their little ones during a peaceful diaper change, taking their sweet time, while I’m over here pleading with my toddler not to redecorate my face with poop as I hurriedly try to get him diapered before we dash out the door to yet another Mommy and Me class that we’re definitely running late for.

I envision other moms banishing screens from their homes the moment they find out they’re expecting, but I’m frantically figuring out how to navigate the Netflix Kids app just to snag two precious minutes to clean up those microwave egg remnants from the carpet—and maybe my hair too.

I picture other mothers magically finding extra hours in the day to tackle laundry, bathing, feeding, cleaning, and even sneaking in a little laughter—because we all know that’s a necessity—while I spread our basic chores throughout the week. Laughter, at least, is plentiful in our home.

I can see other moms crafting developmentally enriching art projects for their kids every single day, while I consider arranging our spaghetti (served with a side of microwave eggs, of course) into interesting shapes at dinner to be a sufficient creative endeavor.

I envision other moms efficiently tackling all their emails with thoughtful replies in one swoop, shutting down their devices for the day, while I pull out my phone, laptop, or tablet a staggering 367 times daily just to respond to the 16 emails sitting in my inbox.

I imagine other mothers leaving insightful and heartfelt messages in their favorite online mom groups, while I feel lucky if I can manage to type a quick “Me too!” or “That’s rough!” amidst the chaos.

I picture other moms snapping adorable holiday card photos in June, pre-ordering them by September, and mailing them out with a cleverly written “Our Year in Review” letter by November 29th. Meanwhile, I’m posting a “Happy Holidays” snap of my kiddo on Facebook on January 3rd, praying that all the family members see it.

I envision other mothers penning the next great American novel during their child’s three-hour naps, while I struggle to type a single sentence as my toddler kicks my hand and bites my shoulder. (I started writing this two weeks ago, and well, here we are!)

I imagine these other moms being super understanding and cutting me slack for all my “lazy mom” moments, while I share a good giggle with my little one and remind myself that, hey mama, it’s all going to be just fine.
