I’m Not Expecting

Nope, not pregnant here! The trio of tests—each with a sassy, cross mark—tossed into my bathroom trash can confirms it. Honestly, with an IUD snugly in place, it shouldn’t be a shocker. Yet, I woke up yesterday feeling like I had been hit by a bus. My stomach was doing gymnastics, cramping like a champ, and heartburn was making me feel like I was breathing fire. To top it off, I’ve been dragging my feet for weeks now.

“Maybe you’re pregnant,” my partner, Tom, threw out there casually.
“Not a chance,” I shot back, “That’s impossible! I just went a little overboard on Fiber One bars. And seriously, we can’t add a baby to our mix right now!”

But as the day dragged on, doubt crept in. I found myself weeping at the end of Hotel for Dogs, sipping lemon tea with toast in hand, and mentally drafting how we’d explain to the kids that the puppy was leaving, but hey, a new sibling was on the way instead! I even caught myself defending my belly when my son, Max, decided to leap onto the couch. For a brief moment, I entertained the thought that maybe, just maybe, another little one wouldn’t be so bad.

Then Tom brought home a pack of tests, and each one flashed a single line faster than I could say “phew!” Thank goodness! I would have lost my mind if they had come back positive. We’re not ready for a baby—not financially, at least. It would have turned our world upside down.

Still, I can’t shake the twinge of disappointment. Is it normal to feel this way?
