December Babies: A Lighthearted Plea for National Abstinence Month

Alright, let’s get a little personal here—only one of my kiddos was actually planned. My partner and I are incredibly fertile, and honestly, it’s a bit of a miracle that I didn’t find myself in a bit of a pickle during my college years. Seriously, all I have to do is think about having a baby, and boom, nine months later, there’s a little one in my arms. Yikes! Okay, Jill, let’s take a step back and stop thinking about babies for a moment.

So, my husband and I weren’t exactly meticulous about birth control, timing, or spacing out our kids. When you’re caught up in the heat of the moment, who thinks about that? But if I had, I definitely would not have chosen March as the month to conceive. From this point forward, I’m declaring March as National Abstinence Month, and I invite you all to join me. Why, you ask? Simple math: March conception leads to December babies, and let’s be honest—December babies can be a handful.

Now, if you’re a December baby, please don’t take this personally—but let’s face it, the struggle is real. You know it, and I feel for you. Parents often try to avoid the dreaded combined gift situation, but it’s almost impossible. With the holidays and a birthday so close together, it can be overwhelming. Kids can only handle so many toys, and the financial strain? Who can keep up with that? Plus, let’s not forget that adding a birthday celebration to an already jam-packed holiday season can make things feel a bit overshadowed.

And it’s not just the parents; think about those poor kids! Dragging them out in the freezing cold for birthday parties is no picnic. Everyone ends up cranky, snotty, and too drained to truly celebrate. Finding a decent indoor venue is a headache too—who wants a dozen kids bouncing around on inflatable toys in a stuffy room?

So, this March, let’s pledge to save future generations from the holiday chaos that comes with December birthdays. Let’s give our children the gift of a proper birthday experience.

Tonight? Maybe let’s just take a rain check. For the sake of our future kiddos.
