Happy Birthday, little one! It’s time for your baby’s twelve-month check-up, and just like the last visit, the pediatrician will perform a thorough physical exam. Your tiny tot will be weighed and measured, and you’ll chat about her growth chart progress. By now, you’re probably both seasoned pros at these appointments, so you can expect a familiar routine.
After the exam (and sometimes during it), the pediatrician will inquire about your baby’s sleep and eating patterns while also checking her mouth for dental health. Expect discussions about her vocabulary, behavior, and the essentials of good oral hygiene. As your little explorer becomes more mobile, strategies for child-proofing your home will also be on the agenda. You might talk about the solids she’s trying now, which new foods are safe at this age, and how to support her walking development. The doctor may delve deeper into her behavior and might even ask you to interact with her to assess her responses. This is simply a way to screen for any potential developmental delays.
At this point, feel free to voice any concerns or questions you might have. The pediatrician will also provide insights into what to expect from your baby in the coming month.
Immunizations Galore
This is the big moment! Your baby will receive a series of important vaccinations, unless you’re following a delayed schedule. She’ll likely get her final hepatitis B dose (if it hasn’t been administered yet), possibly the third or fourth dose of the Haemophilus Influenza Type B Conjugate vaccine (Hib) by 15 months, a fourth dose of the Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV), and a third dose of the Polio (IPV), if needed. Plus, she’ll get her first dose of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine (MMR), the Varicella vaccine, and one dose of the Hepatitis A vaccine before 23 months. It may sound overwhelming, but don’t worry—if some of these can be combined into fewer shots, they will be. Alternatively, you can discuss with your doctor the option of delaying some vaccinations if your baby is playing catch-up.

In summary, your baby’s twelve-month check-up is a chance to monitor her growth, address any questions, and ensure she’s on track developmentally. With important vaccinations on the agenda, it’s a significant milestone for both of you!
