The Foot Rubbing Fiasco

When your partner lets you down over something trivial.

The other night, after I finally tore myself away from my laptop, Mark and I settled into bed. We were sharing some laughs about the antics of our kids, Lily, Ben, and Evan. In a desperate attempt to coax a foot rub out of him, I started playfully rubbing my toes against his leg. My feet were aching from three hours in heels, and I was in dire need of relief. Mark, however, seemed completely oblivious to my subtle hints.

After a few moments of awkward silence, I resorted to outright pleading. “Can you please just give my feet a rub? Pretty please, Mark?”

His response was a dismissive, “No way, I’m not rubbing your feet.”

I whined, “But you think my feet are cute! And they really hurt. Just a little rub?”

He replied, “They used to be cute. They were, um… painted.”

“Just picture them in red!” I shot back.

“Well,” he continued, “they used to have more charm. Just… um… different… uh… YOUNGER.”

“What?!?” I shot him a look that said he’d crossed a line.

“You’re thirteen years older than when we first met,” he tried to explain. “Of course your feet look older. Do you think your mom’s feet are ‘cute’? As time goes on, feet just lose their appeal. It’s a fact of life, you know?”

“No, Mark, I really don’t know.”

He could have chosen a plethora of alternatives: “Your feet are rough, dry, veiny, or even a little chubby.” But OLD? Really? For the record, they’re none of those things! Sure, they might benefit from a good moisturizing rub, but they’re only thirty-one—hardly ancient!

And that was the moment I decided he was in serious trouble.

The End.
