The morning rush hits hard. I stumble into work a few minutes late, thanks to the delightful chaos of getting my little one ready.

“Look at me! I’m at work, I swear!” I announce to my colleagues, hoping they don’t notice my mascara is a little worse for wear after a few emotional moments on the drive.

First stop, the restroom, to fix the makeup situation—thank you, crying baby! Then it’s a quick call to check in on my little one. Oh no, it’s time to pump already?

I manage to squeeze in a questionable amount of actual work between thoughts of missing my baby. “Focus, Jessica, focus,” I tell myself, but all I can think about is that sweet little face. A quick pump break later, and I’m back to staring at my computer, fighting off the urge to nap.

Lunch hour rolls around, and I find myself contemplating whether I should just pack up and never return. Instead, I make another “quick call” to check on the baby. I take a deep breath into a paper bag—what’s that? A wailing sound in the background? Panic mode engaged.

Oops! “Let down” again—time to pump! Why is it so hard to stay awake? Am I going to get fired for this?

Trying to focus is a daily battle. I wonder if my baby is still crying and decide it’s best to call again.

My mind races with thoughts of different financial options that would allow me to stay home with my little one, but every idea just leads to more frustration. Sigh… I head home, ready to repeat this rollercoaster tomorrow.
