5 ’90s Fashion Trends I’m Rocking Again

My mom used to chuckle about how she wished she had kept her miniskirts and bell-bottoms from her younger days. Little did I know that some of the styles I once wore would resurface in such a big way! As I browse for fall outfits, I’m spotting a ton of nostalgic trends I never thought would make a comeback. Here are five retro looks that are back in style:

1. Flannel Shirts

Remember those oversized flannel shirts you would either buy a few sizes too big or borrow from your boyfriend? Well, they’re back! Stores are overflowing with them, but with a modern twist. Today’s flannel shirts are more fitted and tailored, so we can look like ourselves and not just a college kid.

2. Hammer Pants

Those baggy parachute pants that gathered at the ankle were a staple in the early ’90s, and I always thought they looked cool—even if I never owned a pair back then. Fast forward to now, and I find myself with several pairs of Hammer pants. They’re incredibly comfy and perfect for everything from yoga to kids’ soccer games. I’ve even seen other moms rocking them—maybe it really is Hammer Time!

3. Ponchos

As a kid, I had a red poncho gifted from my grandmother that I wore until it was practically a crop top. Now, I adore the ponchos of adult life, which are perfect for cool autumn days. Many adults seem to agree, as they’re showing up everywhere. I love pairing mine with skinny jeans or leggings (which are back in style too!).

4. Leggings/Leg Warmers

Ah, the days of rocking leggings—sometimes with stirrups—and brightly colored leg warmers. I remember my favorite turquoise Esprit leggings paired with hot pink leg warmers. Who cares if we weren’t actually warming up? Nowadays, women are still sporting leggings all day, even if there are no dance moves in sight. Flashdance vibes are eternal, right?

5. Maxi Skirts

Long, flowy skirts were a high school staple for me, often paired with lace tights and ballet flats. Now dubbed “maxi skirts,” they are back and cooler than ever. I wore plenty of them this past summer, and they’re incredibly easy to style with cute flip-flops or ballet flats peeking from underneath.

People often say that if you wore a trend once, you’re too old to revisit it when it comes back around. I wholeheartedly disagree! However, if bodysuits or tapered jeans ever make a reappearance, I’m out. Just can’t go there!
