The Dangers of Dishwashing: A Cautionary Tale

The Incident

Last winter, I managed to sever a tendon in my thumb. Yes, you read that right. It was quite a severe injury that led to complicated surgery, where I was nearly faced with the grim prospect of having to harvest a tendon from my wrist to repair my thumb. Luckily, I dodged that bullet, but I did end up in a cast that extended up to my elbow, leaving only my remaining four fingers free to type—thankfully, my profession relies heavily on it. Just imagine, moving to a new apartment while wearing a cast. Not exactly the sympathy story I was hoping for!

How It Happened

I want to shed light on how we can injure ourselves in the most mundane of settings. My tendon was cut in a split second when a ceramic salad plate shattered in my hands. Who knew a piece of dishware could cause such chaos? I was shocked at how much blood a simple accident could produce. As I later learned, they actually make scalpels from ceramics.

I didn’t rush to the emergency room at the time; I thought, “How could I seriously injure myself washing dishes?” Sure, it looked deeper than your average kitchen mishap, but I figured a few novelty band-aids would suffice. Little did I know, three weeks later, I would be unable to straighten my thumb!

What Parents Know

Now, parents understand that when there’s a lot of blood, it’s time to get to the hospital. I can attribute some of my confusion—like slapping on colorful band-aids instead of seeking medical help—to the fact that I don’t have kids. There’s no alarm that goes off in my head!

Surgery is the worst. The only upside is the painkillers, and you have to be strategic about your pain scale. If you say “8,” you might get something decent; “10” raises eyebrows, and the honest answer might just earn you a recommendation for two Tylenol. Why anyone would willingly choose surgery is beyond me. Unlike a nose job that gives you a new look, tendon repair just means you get to keep your thumb, albeit a less functional one.

Do Accidents Happen at Home?

When friends saw my cast, I concocted wild stories—like I was in a fierce brawl or saving a cat from a tree. Telling people it was a freak dishwashing accident feels utterly mundane. They feign interest but you can see the pity in their eyes as they quickly change the subject. How unexciting to almost lose a thumb without even wielding a weapon!

Now, just like you drive slower after a speeding ticket, I’m trying to be more cautious at home. Recently, I attempted some amateur surgery on a stubborn callus with a blade and learned why those are illegal in nail salons. Thankfully, I’m still intact for now!

Summary

Washing dishes might seem harmless, but it can lead to unexpected injuries. My own experience with a tendon injury serves as a reminder that accidents can happen in the most mundane situations. Parents know to act quickly when seeing blood, but some of us need a little wake-up call. Whether we’re crafting wild stories or attempting home remedies, it’s clear that caution is key in our everyday lives.
