In creating The Girl’s Guide to Absolutely Everything (Workman, 2015 edition), I had the pleasure of chatting with countless women who shared invaluable insights about what they wish they’d known when they tossed their caps at graduation. These nuggets of wisdom could have saved them from some serious heartache while making their 20s and 30s a lot smoother. Here’s what one of them had to say:
Name: Sarah Johnson
Age: 28
Occupation: Senior producer at a digital marketing agency
What do you know now that you wish you had known back then?
- Life Balance is Key: It’s totally possible to shine at work while still enjoying a fulfilling life outside the office. You’ll actually bring more to the table when you have experiences to draw from beyond your 9-to-5—whether that’s traveling, hobbies, or just hanging out with friends.
- Don’t Stress Over Your Career Path: It’s perfectly okay not to have it all figured out! Be open to exploring new opportunities—whether it’s switching jobs, taking a gap year to travel, or diving into a side project that lights you up. The destination might end up being quite different from where you began, and that’s the beauty of it. I used to be all about that straight-and-narrow path, but I learned to embrace the twists and turns along the way.
- It’s Alright to Be a Little Selfish: While supporting others is super important, don’t forget to prioritize your own needs. Whether it’s finding a hobby, living solo, or simply saying “no” now and then, carving out time for yourself will make you a better friend, partner, and colleague. Trust me—I’m still learning this one every day!
- Ask for Help When You Need It: There’s strength in acknowledging when you need assistance. You don’t have to do everything alone, and asking for help is not a weakness—it’s a smart move.
- You’re the CEO of Your Career: While it’s great to have mentors and advocates, ultimately, you’re in charge of your own professional journey. Rely on yourself and trust your instincts, but don’t be afraid to lean on others for support when you need it.
