7 Reasons Why Step Aerobics Still Rocks!

I’ll never forget my first step aerobics class: it was 1990, and I was a sophomore in college. A friend from my dorm came bouncing into my room, decked out in black spandex, an oversized tee, and some killer Avias, inviting me to join her for a late-night aerobics class at the gym. Sure, it started at 9 p.m., and I was in my high school boyfriend’s boxers and a The Dream of the Blue Turtles tour shirt, but I figured, why not?

I stacked two purple risers under my green step like all the cool kids and piled my hair into a scrunchie. At first, I was a total fish out of water—couldn’t find the beat, had no clue what “repeater knees” meant, and kept adjusting my boxers. But after a few classes—and a couple of new pairs of spandex tights—I finally caught on to the four-count rhythm and nailed those repeater knees. By the end of each session, I was drenched in sweat and riding a high from the exhilarating routines.

In today’s fitness landscape, there are countless options—TRX, spin, interval training, kickboxing, barre—but step aerobics is still my go-to. Here’s why this classic workout remains amazing:

  1. No Butt Pain Here!
Sure, cycling classes are all the rage (and I enjoy them, too), but let’s be real: sitting on a hard bike seat for an hour? Ouch! Step aerobics focuses on your feet, making it a comfy option for those of us with sensitive behinds—unless you trip, of course. Yikes!
  2. The Tunes Are Still a Vibe
You just can’t replicate that club-like atmosphere in other classes. Zumba feels too serious, and interval training is all about the boot camp vibe. Even if today’s beats are from artists like Dua Lipa instead of Cyndi Lauper, that infectious energy is still there. Plus, who doesn’t love when instructors throw in some nostalgic tracks like “Uptown Funk” or “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”? Yes, please!
  3. Serious Calorie Burn
No matter the latest fitness trend, step aerobics is still a high-intensity calorie incinerator. According to experts, I can burn about six times more calories doing step than lounging around. So basically, if I step once a week, I can relax the other six days. Win!
  4. Cool Gear Still Rocks
Okay, maybe we’ve moved beyond Reebok high-tops and neon leotards, but I still love sportin’ a stylish headband (a.k.a. sweatband) and moisture-wicking leggings. Workout fashion is on point nowadays, so why not look good while breaking a sweat?
  5. No Pressure to Impress
I don’t have to show off fancy moves like tick-tock or reverse V-steps to feel good about myself. I’m confident enough to stick with one riser! My joints are grateful for that too.
  6. I Can Autopilot
With over 25 years of step aerobics under my belt, I practically read the instructor’s mind. The core moves—basic right, turn-step, over-the-top—are so ingrained, I can zone out and ponder life’s mysteries while stepping along.
  7. Groove Without Embarrassment
Where else can you shake it like a Polaroid picture in public—while sober—and not feel like a dork? I’m just here to dance, not to stir soup and do the Charleston, right?

I’m open to all kinds of workouts that don’t leave me sore, keep me fit, and make me feel fabulous. I’ll happily try new trends, but I’ll always return to step aerobics, with its energizing music, solid no-slip board, and the classic cue of “corner-to-corner knees!”
