I have always been captivated by storms. The rush of winds before the rain, the dark clouds gathering on the horizon, they command respect. Like a battalion advancing down a slope, the clouds announce their arrival, eclipsing the sun one ray at a time. The once blue sky transforms into a dramatic canvas of navy, gray, green, and sometimes even a peculiar yellow glow. The anticipation of what follows is electrifying.
As the first drops of rain splatter against the windows, it’s a reminder to close them, lest the carpets get soaked. When the clouds finally unleash their pent-up rain, a sense of relief washes over. Once the downpour subsides, the world is left with a fresh dampness, a coolness in the air, and a few courageous frogs venturing out from their hideaways.
Sometimes, storms take on an ominous ferocity, heightening the thrill while instilling fear. The sky darkens to near-black, lightning strikes close enough to witness trees splintering, and hail the size of golf balls pelts cars unfortunate enough to be parked outside. Floodwaters surge, transforming curbs into rivers, whisking away anything not anchored to the ground. Sirens wail as people scramble for safety—into basements if they’re fortunate, under tables if they’re not. The roar of a tornado can obliterate everything in its path, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
For a rainbow to appear, several conditions must align. Water droplets need to hang in the air, and sunlight must pierce through the clouds, illuminating the water-laden atmosphere. While daylight typically returns after a storm, it doesn’t always arrive at the right moment. Often, clouds linger, moisture dissipates, and as the storm weakens, the sun struggles to shine through. Yet, on those rare occasions when sunlight breaks through even the slightest gaps, the beauty of light is revealed, bending to showcase the vibrant colors hidden within.
When we discovered that our daughter Mia would not survive long after birth, the storm clouds began to gather. Upon her arrival, she was alive but barely hanging on, and the torrential downpour of grief engulfed us. Watching her take her last shallow breath felt like a tornado ripping through our hearts, leaving devastation in its wake. Following the losses of two more pregnancies, our despair deepened, and we found ourselves navigating a flood of hopelessness. Our lives were turned upside down, marred by forces beyond our control, leaving us to sit amidst the wreckage.
The first glimmer of light appeared with my fourth pregnancy. Anxiety still walked alongside us, but this time felt different. Each day brought a new ray of hope, despite discouraging test results and skeptical doctors. The pregnancy continued, defying the odds.
Sunbeams began to chase away the heavy gray, as the dampness in the air began to evaporate. As we approached our daughter’s birth, both victories and setbacks unfolded. There were days when the clouds returned, casting shadows over our optimism, yet other days when joy about her health and support from loved ones brightened our spirits.
When our daughter arrived, it felt as though the clouds finally broke. Though she was born two months early, requiring a five-week stay in the NICU and facing various medical challenges, the light was relentless. With every day she grew stronger, the brilliance of our rainbow intensified, showcasing its vibrant colors.
We are forever grateful for our rainbow baby, but I still find beauty in storms. Our journey to this moment was not just about welcoming a child; it encompassed the love for four little souls. We have weathered hardship and near destruction, yet here we stand, amidst the remnants that have shaped our destiny. What can be destructive also lays the groundwork for resilience, courage, and ultimately, joy.
