Dear Little One,

As part of our nightly routine, I drew down your cheerful polka dot shade, dressed you in your cozy pajamas, and we sang our favorite lullaby, “Twinkle, Twinkle.” But tonight feels different. Pulling that shade down felt like lifting a heavy burden, and for good reason: things are changing for our family. Tonight marks a significant moment, as it’s the last time I will say, “I’ll see you in the morning” while closing this door. This is the door that welcomed you home from the hospital, where we celebrated your first Christmas, and where you spent your first night alone after co-sleeping.

I must gently share that Mom and Dad will no longer be living under the same roof, and I’m truly sorry for this news. When I closed the door tonight and you called out for “Daddy,” my heart shattered a little too.

I’ve spent countless sleepless nights pondering how to explain this to you in a way that you can grasp, while ensuring you don’t feel anxious. I want you to know that you are cherished by both of us, even though we will be living just a short distance apart. It’s painful for me to admit this, as I often feel like we’ve failed as a family. Perhaps the real conversation needs to start with me.

While it may seem like we’ve failed, I believe in the bigger picture. We haven’t truly failed, and we won’t, because you, my love, are the reason we will always fight for what’s right for our family.

Please understand that I made this choice out of love for you and everyone involved, as we all deserve happiness and respect. I refuse to perpetuate unhealthy patterns; I want to show you what true love looks like—not a façade that looks good on social media. This means taking steps toward positive change, which I hope will benefit us all.

Who we are as individuals shapes who we are as parents. I commit to being the best version of myself for you. I want you to learn that the right choice isn’t always the easiest one and that you should never settle for anything that doesn’t recognize your worth.

Goodnight, my sweet child. May you drift into peaceful dreams, whether you’re at Mommy’s house or Daddy’s. Love surrounds you, no matter where you are.
