I never intended to create a dance movement after the election; it just sort of happened. There’s only so much news you can consume and frustration you can harbor in a single day before you need a break.
I’m not exactly the most hopeful person. Seeking joy in everything isn’t my style. I’m more inclined to give a sarcastic salute to overly cheerful stores that proclaim “Life Is Good” on a dreary Wednesday. I prefer to keep my expectations low so I can be pleasantly surprised by the mundane. But one thing I do enjoy is dancing, and I’m not particularly good at it!
At age 10, I performed a lip-sync routine to Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” in front of my classmates. Picture me cartwheeling across the stage in all black, complete with a questionable perm and bright red glasses. Sadly, that was my peak, and I’ve been chasing that thrill ever since. Now at 35, I’m still an unknown in the dance world.
Given my dancing history and the current climate, I feel the urge to bust a move. When I express my desire to dance to friends, I truly mean it—though I’ll stick to the Cabbage Patch and the Hammer, and steer clear of choreographed line dances. The Cupid Shuffle might as well be a math problem for my feet, and I didn’t spend years avoiding college math just to embarrass myself on the dance floor.
After the election, humbled by the unexpected outcome, I turned to music. I’ve dubbed my nightly music sessions the ResistDANCE.
Think about it: Can you really stay angry while jamming to ’90s ska? Or when Sisqó sings about thongs? Doesn’t your spirit rise at the first notes of a Spice Girls track? My evenings have transformed into a Richard Simmons-style workout where I dance freely to anything that won’t drag me down.
And because I love sharing the joy, let’s embrace this ResistDANCE together. Every other Friday, expect a new Spotify playlist dedicated to moms everywhere. The inaugural playlist features hip-hop classics from 1988 to 1992, including tracks like “I Got a Man” by Positive K, “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” by TLC, “Jump” by Kris Kross, “You Can’t Touch This” by M.C. Hammer, and even Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.” The Bust a Move playlist boasts over 90 minutes of nostalgic beats perfect for when you need a break from reality and want to relive those carefree roller-skating nights.
Got ideas for future playlists? Share your thoughts on Facebook—I’ll be keeping an eye on the comments.
