The Secrets We Hide from Our Kids

Hey there, it’s your friendly neighborhood parent, and I’m sharing these secrets with you because, let’s be real, you’re still blissfully unaware of the world of blogging and what’s lurking on the internet. As you grow, you’ll learn a lot, but for now, here are ten well-guarded truths that might surprise you – or at least keep me a bit more in control until you have kids of your own.

  1. TV is my treat, not yours. You might think that watching a show is a reward for good behavior, but the truth is, it’s more of a reward for me! When you’re being delightful, I don’t need to turn on the TV. But when the chaos of crying, whining, and sibling rivalry kicks in, those blissful episodes of your favorite cartoons become my escape. If you want more TV time, just know that it might mean you were a little more rambunctious than normal.
  2. Naptime is my chocolate chip cookie hour. You probably don’t see me munching much, but that’s because I’m setting a good example. While you’re dreaming away, I indulge in cookies like there’s no tomorrow. I’m not just snacking; I’m practically hosting a cookie-eating marathon. And you better believe I’m catching up on all the shows you’re not allowed to watch, too.
  3. Your tears get me every time. Seriously, you’ve got some serious acting chops! It’s like I’m living with little Oscar nominees who can summon tears over the simplest things. Even when I know you’re playing it up, I still find myself wanting to give in to your demands. I just can’t resist your performances, even if it’s over something as trivial as a turn with a toy.
  4. College tuition is a mystery. Thank goodness you’re too young to understand how much college costs! If you knew the financial reality we’re facing, you’d probably wake up crying more than you already do. Let’s just say if our savings were represented by a jar of Play-Doh, it wouldn’t even cover one semester of tuition at a decent school. We’ve got some planning to do!
  5. Your speech quirks are charming. I’m not a fan of baby talk, but there’s something endearing about how little ones try to sound grown-up. I love the way you mispronounce words, and even though I correct you gently, I can’t help but smile inside whenever you do. It’s a reminder that you’re still my little ones.
  6. Your grandpa is no longer with us. This one’s a toughie. I’ve shown you pictures of my dad, and while I share the happy memories, I dread the day you ask why you’ve never met him. Explaining death is hard, especially when it means you’d understand that parents can die. For now, I just focus on the good and change the subject.
  7. Swear words are on my playlist. Remember that catchy song we sing along to? I always turn the volume down when certain parts come on because, let’s face it, there are words in that song that you don’t need to hear just yet. There’s a time and place for everything, and this isn’t it!
  8. I was a picky eater too. I spend so much energy trying to encourage you to eat a variety of foods, but the truth is, I was much worse at your age! I survived on peanut butter sandwiches alone for years. My goal is for you to at least try some veggies before reaching adulthood!
  9. I’ll eventually return to work. You may not grasp the concept of work yet, and that’s okay. But I used to have a job before you were born, and while being home with you is the best thing ever, I know that one day I’ll need to balance work and family. It breaks my heart to think about it, but it’s a necessity.
  10. You are my best friends. I once thought it was a little sad when parents claimed their kids were their best friends, but now I get it. You’re funnier and cooler than anyone else I know! But I need to maintain that parent-child dynamic, so I can’t let you know just how much I enjoy our time together. After all, my job is to guide you, not to be your buddy.
