My children are huge fans of PBS, soaking up fascinating facts like how an avalanche can reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour, why the sky appears blue due to light frequencies filtering through the atmosphere, and even the simple equation of 4+3=7. Plus, they learn all the basics—colors, shapes, and the importance of sharing.
However, as charming as puppets and animated dinosaurs are, I can’t help but feel that there’s a bit more they could teach. The world is competitive, and kids need more than just lessons on patience and curiosity. How about practical life skills? Imagine a show dedicated to essential life lessons—like the importance of not poking an angry bear!
Let’s dive into 20 practical lessons that would be immensely beneficial for our kids:
- Always knock before entering Mom and Dad’s room.
- The same rule applies to the bathroom.
- Chasing the dog with a spatula while making siren noises is not acceptable.
- Sneaking food under the table for the dog is a no-go.
- Trust me, the bath water won’t harm you.
- The couch is not an arena for ninja training.
- Girls generally don’t appreciate being hit with sticks or called silly names.
- Absolutely do NOT stick chewing gum under the chair.
- Eating the gum you stuck there? Just don’t!
- We do not play Fruit Ninja with real knives and actual bananas.
- Those organic bananas cost a fortune, mind you.
- If you step in dog poop, please take your shoes off before coming inside.
- An entire roll of toilet paper is not meant to be flushed.
- You can’t call your brother a “dumbass,” no matter how tempting it is.
- Wiping your boogers on your brother instead of hitting him? Not cool.
- You need both soap and water to clean your hands—not just one or the other!
- Even if they’re labeled washable, markers should never be used on walls, floors, or yourself—or your brother!
- If you hit another kid with a plastic sword, expect them to hit you back.
- When we say “use your words,” we don’t mean throwing a tantrum.
- If you create a mess and ignore three warnings to clean it, prepare for Mom to lose her cool.
Wouldn’t it be entertaining if PBS made a twist on their shows, like having Daniel Tiger face the consequences of his actions with a firm timeout? Or maybe a spell gone wrong that turns Abby Cadabby into a houseplant? There’s so much potential for teaching kids that real-life consequences exist for childish behavior, and it could leave a lasting impression.

In summary, while PBS offers fantastic educational content, incorporating some real-world life lessons could greatly enhance their programming. Kids need to navigate the complexities of life with a bit more guidance.
