Reviving Our Favorite Classic Toys

My children enjoy keeping me up to date with the latest trends. They firmly believe that my fondness for leggings and lack of interest in Top 40 hits signifies that I’m not as trendy as I should be. While I may not be in vogue and might not recognize popular artists, I can still rap every word of “Rapper’s Delight,” thank you very much.

Taking advantage of my apparent cluelessness about modern culture, my kids love to “introduce” me to what they think are groundbreaking new toys. They are convinced that they’ve uncovered the latest and greatest inventions, saving me from my own pop-culture ignorance. However, many of these so-called “new” toys are the very same ones I cherished during my childhood. As they say, everything old becomes new again.

Rubik’s Cube

Currently, my kids are enamored with the Rubik’s Cube. However, today’s versions come in all sorts of unusual shapes, including a triangular “cube” and a hexagonal one that leaves me dizzy. After just a few moments of twisting and turning, I’m tempted to launch it across the room, but it manages to keep my kids engaged for a little while (okay, maybe just minutes, but I’ll take what I can get).

Spirograph

I adored my Spirograph as a child, so I was delighted when my son received one as a gift a few months ago. There’s something oddly calming about creating intricate, flowery designs that I can’t quite put into words.

My Little Pony

Who didn’t adore My Little Ponies during their childhood? If you didn’t, we might need to reconsider our friendship. I was absolutely obsessed with these beautiful creatures, and I’m thrilled they’re making a comeback—regardless of gender! Personally, I aspire to be Princess Twilight Sparkle when I grow up. #LifeGoals

Mad Libs

Long family road trips often included passes of time with Mad Libs alongside my siblings, and now my children enjoy the same activity. What’s not to love? It’s silly, entertaining, and even educational, teaching them about grammar—even if their most popular nouns tend to be poop, penis, or pee.
