Recently, I shared a photo of my feet in a pair of trendy sandals from a popular retail chain. These stylish gladiator-inspired sandals, with their wraparound ankle straps, marked my first non-athletic shoe purchase since becoming a parent again. It’s hard to believe that I’m a year into motherhood once more; sometimes, it feels like I just had my baby.
These sandals are adorable, affordable, and comfortable—a winning combination for any mom. Naturally, I was thrilled to showcase them to my modest Instagram following.
Moments after posting, I received a text from my closest friend: “GET A PEDICURE ASAP!” Upon revisiting the photo, I realized she was absolutely right. My right toenail looked like a witch’s talon, and the left one had a jagged edge that could inflict injury. In a world filled with intricate nail designs and trendy hashtags, my neglected nails definitely stood out in the wrong way. I can’t even recall the last time I enjoyed a peaceful visit to a nail salon. This led me to reflect on how significantly my beauty routine has evolved since becoming a mother—twice.
Hair Care
Do you remember when regular haircuts and highlights were a priority? There was a time when I adhered to the “every six weeks” haircut rule. Now, thinking back, it’s amusing. After the birth of my first child, it took ages for me to confront my growing roots. I found a stylist from a local moms’ group to highlight my hair at home while I nursed my newborn, who was refusing the bottle.
What a disaster that was! My baby wailed the entire time, the stylist ended up with bleach on her pants, and my hair turned out a shocking white instead of blonde. This mishap led to a costly corrective procedure months later, as I struggled to find a babysitter I trusted.
When my second child arrived, I had transitioned into the glorious world of ombre hair—an easy, low-maintenance style that suited my new lifestyle. Whether or not the ombre trend is still in vogue doesn’t concern me; if it’s working, why change it? However, after experiencing hair loss months postpartum, I had no choice but to chop my hair. The thought of spending time in a salon while my home needed attention was unappealing.
When I finally cut my hair and refreshed my ombre, I felt better but not motivated to return soon. Now, I only manage a salon visit twice a year, and I’ve noticed my hair is healthier and my wallet is happier.
Waxing
Before motherhood, monthly waxing was part of my routine. After my first child, I resorted to this painful procedure a few times a year. I’ve since accepted that I won’t achieve the hairless look I once desired. The at-home laser system I splurged on? I’ve used it just once; the process is too time-consuming. I’d rather spend that time engaged in activities I enjoy during those rare moments of peace. And don’t worry, I won’t be sharing any bikini area close-ups anytime soon.
Nail Care
As previously mentioned, time is a luxury I no longer have. You prioritize what matters to you, and perhaps I don’t care as much about my nails anymore. While I dream of sporting extravagant nail designs, they wouldn’t last long in my chaotic life. I’d probably lose a charm in my toddler’s smoothie or break a nail while dressing my child. For now, I’ll stick to short, unpolished nails that appear relatively healthy. At least I’m avoiding toxic nail products, right?
Makeup
Makeup has always been a love of mine. It’s the secret behind my presentable look in family photos just weeks after my son was born. Although my daily routine has simplified to just mascara and tinted lip balm, I still enjoy the confidence makeup brings. Interestingly, I’ve become more comfortable heading out without it, which is perhaps the best gift my children have given me: a reduced vanity and increased happiness.
Motherhood has transformed my beauty budget, grooming habits, and the time I invest in my appearance. Yet, I still cherish moments of getting dolled up. I hope my spontaneous red-lipstick days teach my children that it’s okay to enjoy beauty while also embracing natural looks. After all, when beauty routines interfere with what truly matters, they’re simply not worth it.
